Stop Squeezing Your Pimples - 7 Safe Ways to Get Rid of Pimples

It's everyone's worst nightmare. Waking up the day before a special event to discover a big, red pimple baring itself for all to see right on your face!
Here's how to get rid of it quickly and safely:
1. Don't ever pinch, squeeze or pick at a pimple. This only causes it to become more red and inflamed, and will spread the bacteria and oils that caused it in the first place, to other parts of your face! It can also lead to scars.
2. Every 30 minutes, apply an ice pack to the pimple and hold it there for about 2 minutes. This will decrease the swelling and redness and help shrink the inflammation and pain that sometimes comes along with it.
3. They don't call it concealer for nothing! Covering the pimple with a light dose of flesh-tinted concealer can help mask it when you're in a hurry. It also helps cover up that oily shine.
4. Cleanse your skin 2-3 times a day with mild, unscented soap or a specialized acne cleanser that has no harsh chemicals (such as lye). Scrub skin gently with an exfoliating pad or washcloth, but don't rub too hard, otherwise you'll sap your skin of its own natural oils, which help to repel buildup naturally.
5. Apply a cream or ointment containing benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid (many over-the-counter acne medicines contain these ingredients) to the blemish or around the entire facial area. Note that these ingredients both have a tendency to dry out skin if used too much and are not recommended if you have
sensitive skin.
6. Wear oil-free makeup whenever possible. These types have less of a tendency to cause the pore buildup that results in blemishes. Remove your makeup nightly and cleanse with an acne-fighting medicine to remove dirt, oil and makeup from deep within the skin.
7. If you're in need of a quick fix, a dab of toothpaste on the affected area right before bed can help soothe irritation and reduce redness. Pressing and holding a wet tea bag or a cotton ball with a dab of lemon juice against the blemish for five minutes can also reduce swelling and redness.
If you follow these tips, chances are you'll notice a significant difference rather quickly - often within a day or two. If pimples become a recurring problem or worsen, your doctor or dermatologist can suggest a daily skin cleansing routine that will suit your skin type. Other long-term remedies, such as facial masks, diet adjustments and increasing the amount of water you drink can also help combat outbreaks.

Say NO To Smoking

Is there any adventure or fun in smoking? Absolutely not! Don't be fooled by the fun packed advertisements of the cigarette making companies. There is no "taste", no "fun" and no "adventure" in smoking cigarettes. These are just the slogans of the cigarette making companies which are multiplying their profits at the cost of the precious human lives.
The greedy multi-national multi-billion dollar cigarette manufacturers are killing people quietly without being noticed by anyone. According to the WHO report, every 6.5 seconds a person in the world dies prematurely due to cancer, heart attack, respiratory or some other kind of tobacco related diseases. No doubt, the tobacco is the fourth most common risk factor for diseases worldwide.
If you are a smoker then think seriously for a moment and decide whether you are mentally OK. I very much doubt because you are spending money on the purchase of an item which is not only risking your life by unintentionally inviting numerous diseases to attack your body but also risking the lives of other people who are forced to inhale second hand smoke, which is more dangerous than smoking. If you smoke inside your house then you also risk the life of your spouse and children. Is it a wise decision to keep on smoking?
Say no to smoking, if you want to live a normal healthy life free from diseases. Why not take a bold decision NOW and quit smoking immediately! Are you prepared to do so?
Tobacco use is going to kill nearly 10 million people each year, mostly in their productive middle ages. It is estimated that 75% of these deaths will occur in the developing countries mainly due to the high number of smokers and lack of medical facilities available there.
Due to lack of knowledge and education, the number of smokers in the developing countries and poor households is increasing at an alarming rate. The warning written on the cigarette packets is mostly ignored by the illiterate smokers. It is sad that the average amount spent by poor households on tobacco is nearly the same as the amount spent on education. A recent study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has proved that the more people are educated, the less they smoke.
Your health is your best asset. Protect your life from painful tobacco related diseases. Live a healthy and happy life and just say no to smoking.

Tips for Better Meditation

Meditation students often come to me and ask what they can do to improve their meditation. Success in meditation is not the result of any one single factor but depends on sustained and systematic effort over a period of time. However, there are a few tips for meditation, that will help you to improve your performance, regardless of the meditation method that you follow.
1. Prepare your body for meditation
Your physical condition has a tremendous influence on your mind. This is true for your day to day activity, but even more so when it comes to meditation. You can prepare your body for meditation by eating the right food, and by coming to meditation with an empty stomach. Eating the right food, means food which strengthens the body but doesn't have any adverse affect on the mind. If you consume products that make the mind dull or over-stimulated then it will be much harder to meditate. And whatever your diet is, when you sit down to meditate, it should be on an empty stomach. That is why one of the best times to meditate is in the morning, before you have had your breakfast. Another good time is in the evening, before the evening meal.
2. Prepare Your Mind for Meditation
Just as your body must be prepared, so must your mind. Before you start meditation you must convince yourself, that this period of meditation is your time for personal growth, and that it is important, as important as anything else in your life. When you close your eyes to meditate, you should not jump up to answer the phone, or get ready to leave your meditation due to some slight disturbance. If you convince yourself of the importance of meditation, then your example will also convince others around you and they won't disturb you during meditation. So, remember your periods of meditation are one of the most important parts of your daily routine, and treat them as such.
3. Sing Before Meditation
The Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore once said, "God respects me when I work, but He loves me when I sing." That explains the place of song and music in all the great spiritual traditions. Before you begin meditation you can sing spiritual songs, whose meaning elevates your mind. It doesn't matter if you have "good" voice or a "bad" voice, sing from the heart, and your mind will go to a point that will be the ideal starting point for your meditation.
4. Sit in a Proper Position
Remember when you were in school and the teacher looked around and saw someone slumping in his or her seat, and she said "sit up straight!" She had a good point; when the back is straight the mind is alert. Sit in a position that will keep the back straight. Sit with cross legs in a simple position, or a half-lotus or a full lotus. In addition to making the mind more alert, these positions help you to rest the various motor organs, and provide a peaceful physical base for your meditation.
In the beginning these positions may seem difficult or uncomfortable, but if you can get used to them, they will help you to deepen your meditation.
5. Follow the Meditation Instructions Exactly
Remember carefully what your meditation instructor taught you and do your best to carry it out, exactly according to the instructions. Don't experiment and make up your own method. The various systems of meditation are based on thousands of years of experience, so you don't have to try to figure out what to do. Take advantage of the age-old knowledge of the past, and you will make rapid strides towards a bright future. If you have forgotten any part of your meditation method, go and see your instructor and get a review of your lesson.
6. Be Regular in Your Meditation Practice
This is one of the key factors to success. Meditation works, if you work. If you only do meditation once a month or on whim, when you feel like it, then it will be impossible to be successful and realize the benefits of meditation: mental clarity, inner peace, love for others and spiritual awareness. Make meditation a part of your daily routine. Just as surely as the sun comes up each day, do your meditation without fail. Fix a time for it in the morning and evening and do it on a regular basis If you get into the habit of doing your practice regularly, then you have taken one of the single most important steps towards success in meditation, and indeed, in your life.
7. Be Patient
"Rome wasn't built in a day," and similarly you cannot make miraculous changes in your personality or in your spiritual life in just one sitting of meditation. Don't be discouraged if you feel that nothing is happening. Meditation is a subtle art, the changes come slowly but surely. Keep on practicing and your meditation is sure to deepen and you will indeed be successful.

The Causes of Blindness

A recent analysis of data indicates that vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of childhood blindness. It was estimated that 70% of the 500,000 children who become blind annually do so because of xerophthalmia. This corresponds to a prevalence of roughly 1 million in view of the high mortality among affected children.

Hemianopsia can result when a hemorrhagic, thrombotic, or embolic stroke affects part of the optic pathway Associated signs and symptoms vary according to the location and size of the stroke, but may include a decreased LOC; intellectual deficits, such as memory loss and poor judgment; personality changes; emotional lability; a headache; and seizures The patient may also develop contralateral hemiplegia, dysarthria, dysphagia, ataxia, a unilateral sensory loss, apraxia, agnosia, aphasia, blurred vision, decreased visual acuity, and diplopia

The link between poverty and treatable visual impairment is most obvious when conducting regional comparisons of cause. Most adult visual impairment in North America and Western Europe is related to age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. While both of these conditions are subject to treatment, neither can be cured. Another common cause is retinopathy of prematurity. In developing countries, wherein people have shorter life expectancies, cataracts and water-borne parasites—both of which can be treated effectively—are most often the culprits (see River blindness, for example). Of the estimated 40 million blind people located around the world, 70–80% can have some or all of their sight restored through treatment.
Another disease is called Trachoma.

Trachoma is caused by a virus that affects the cornea and the conjunctiva or lining of the eyelid. The white part of the eye is called the sclera, and the colored part is the iris. The conjunctiva covers the sclera. Trachoma is contagious. It is spread by flies and contact with towels and other articles that have been used by people who have the disease. Physicians can cure the disease in the early stages by using medicines.

There are different causes of change blindness. According to scientists, change blindness can happen as a result of disturbance or disruption in visual continuity. This disruption can be either due to eye saccade, an eyelid flicker, an eye blink, a shift of the picture or even a film cut in case of a motion picture. In order to differentiate changes in the vision, it is important that there is effective coordination between the eye and the brain where one image is compared with another image that already exists in the memory.

Diseases: These are the leading cause of blindness. There are a variety of diseases that lead to blindness. Popular among these glaucoma, trachoma, cataracts, uveitis and diabetic retinopathy. While in some cases blindness occurs as a result of a parasitic infection in the eye, in others it occurs as a result of malnutrition. Blindness due to vitamin A deficiency is common in most of the developing and under-developed countries.

Glaucoma generally affects older people. This happens when fluids in the eye build up and cause too much pressure in the eye, damaging important nerves, etc.. To know what a person feels like with glaucoma, think of how your eyes feel after coming out of a swimming pool with a lot of chlorine in it. (This does not cause glaucoma, but makes the eyes feel as a person does with glaucoma)This disease can be prevented and eye doctors almost always check for glaucoma when a patient has an eye exam. If the person who has glaucoma doesn't take the appropriate medicine for the condition, they can lose their eyesight.

Soft Drink Alert: Dangers of Benzene

Losing weight is a real major health concern for at least two-thirds of the American population. Many adults and children drink themselves into being overweight or obesity. Beyond those nutritionally empty calories that soft drinks have and the number one source of calories in a typical American diet, a long known about threat in soft drinks, benzene, has health officials concerned again.
Benzene is a known human carcinogen (cancer causing agent) that has been linked to leukemia. It can form in soft drinks that contain both vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and either or, sodium benzoate, or potassium benzoate. Many soft drinks use sodium benzoate to stop bacteria growth and spoilage. Vitamin C can be present because the manufacturer added it or it can occur naturally from fruit concentrates used in the beverage. Soft drink manufacturers do not add benzene to the drinks directly, rather the compound is formed by a reaction to (ascorbic acid) and the preservatives that are added to the drink, in the presence of heat and light.
Believe it or not the FDA has known about this carcinogen threat for over fifteen years, and let the soft drink industry to voluntarily police themselves on how to best lower the benzene levels in their soft drinks. Presently the FDA is still hiding benzene data that they feel would be "confusing" to the consumers of soft drinks. I wonder if they think people will be "confused" as to why the FDA did not blow the whistle on this threat a decade and a half ago?
Because children may be especially sensitive to benzene, as their bone marrow cells are highly active, all soft drinks should be eliminated in schools immediately until they can be proven safe and free of all their harmful effects.
Being overweight or obese is just the first stage for many, of life long battles with so many other related ill health issues. Drinking yourself into a state of disease is a physical choice that you can have control over! If you are a parent, you can be the most important role model for your children. Surveys have found that parents are more of an influence on how their children eat and drink, than their peers.
While making the decision to eat more healthier foods is a wonderful thing, people are seriously underestimating the most powerful disease control weapon in their diet is in choosing more wisely on what to drink, and what to avoid.
Your body substance is made up mostly of 75% water. As a safe thirst quencher, water is hard to beat! Shelf-stable juices and single serve milks can be added as some healthy alternatives to break up the daily routine of consuming water. Try adding a squirt of real lemon or lime juice to water for an added citrus flavor.
From my perspective one of the most important and easiest changes you can make to improve your health, is to eliminate soft drinks from your daily diet. While an occasional soda is not going to harm anyone, daily consumption of them is simply a disease just waiting to happen.

How Is Leukemia Treated?

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. There are two types of leukemia, chronic and acute, which are treated differently and have different symptoms. Acute leukemia rapidly progresses and needs immediate, aggressive treatment. Chronic leukemia can take months or years to show symptoms and may not need immediate treatment but will require ongoing monitoring.
Chemotherapy utilizes chemicals to treat the cancer. It causes many side effects such as hair loss, nausea and decline of the immune system. The complete course of therapy can be from two to five years including maintenance. This is the most common form of treatment for leukemia with the desired result being total remission. Even without symptoms, ongoing monitoring must occur to guard against relapse.
Radiation therapy is another form of treatment. It is painless and in low doses causes very few side effects. Where the radiation is concentrated and the exposure levels will determine the side effects, if any, and the severity of them. Damage to the skin, swelling and infertility are among the possible side effects.
A bone marrow transplant is an effective way to prolong the life of cancer patients. It is, however, a risky surgery and requires a donor which can be difficult in attaining. These surgeries should be performed at state of the art hospitals specializing in cancer treatment. This surgery has a high mortality rate and is therefore used only in life threatening cases.
Immunotherapy is a means to stimulate the immune system so the body can attack the cancer cells. This type of treatment is still in its early stages and continually under development. It is believed that this type of treatment may prove less harmful than chemotherapy or radiation therapy and may someday supplant these treatments as a method for treating cancer.
Long term effects of leukemia treatments may cause anemia. This side effect can be treated by blood transfusions or platelet transfusions. There are risks with transfusions but it is believed transfusions will help reduce the threat of additional complications such as heart attacks. Doses of antibiotics are also generally prescribed to leukemia patients to help counteract the danger of infection cause by declined immune system or treatment side effects.
There are currently almost 200,000 people in the United States diagnosed with leukemia and an estimated 35,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. It is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 20. There are many treatment facilities throughout the United States specializing in cancer treatment. Early diagnosis, aggressive treatment, and monitoring will help prolong life and increase chances of a person going into remission.

Home Remedies For Nausea - Chinese Style

These home remedies for nausea are based on simple, traditional Chinese ways to relieve and prevent this common and uncomfortable symptom. Several remedies use ginger for its ability to harmonize and settle the stomach. These particular ginger remedies for nausea can therefore also be used in cases where vomiting occurs as well. Note though that ginger has a warming effect on the body, so if you feel uncomfortably hot or flushed or perhaps have a headache after taking it via one of these remedies for nausea, reduce the amount of ginger next time, or try a non-ginger remedy.
Home Remedies for Nausea
Remedy 1. Ginger Milk: Boil 250ml of fresh, whole milk, 25ml of ginger juice (made from crushing fresh ginger) and 25g of brown sugar for 10 minutes. Sip slowly while it's still hot.
Remedy 2. Ginger Water: Put 3 slices of fresh ginger in a cup, add boiling water, and brown sugar to taste. Drink warm. Leave the ginger in the cup and top it up with more water 1 or 2 times throughout the day if necessary.
Remedy 3. Ginger Tea: Put 3 slices of fresh ginger and 2-3 grams of black tea (or a tea bag) in a cup. Add boiling water, then let it steep for several minutes. Drink warm. As above, leave the ingredients in the cup and top it up throughout the day if necessary.
Remedy 4. Pu Er Tea: From Yunnan province in China, and widely available, this tea is highly regarded for its beneficial effects on digestion. It may be used in cases of nausea, vomiting and even obesity. Put 5 or 6 grams in a cup, add boiling water, then let it steep for several minutes. Drink it warm. Re-use it throughout the day, as above.
Remedy 5. Orange Peel: Perhaps the simplest of all these home remedies for nausea, but not necessarily the least effective. Peel an orange and bruise the skin by twisting and crushing it with your fingers. Hold the skin to your nose and sniff the scent.
Remedy 6. Acupressure: Applying thumb pressure to a specific point on your wrists makes for another very simple, yet highly effective remedy for nausea. This point is well known by Chinese medicine practitioners for its ability to relieve anxiety, stress, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. For full illustrated instructions on locating and pressing the point (referred to as Point 1), see:
For greater effectiveness it is recommended that you combine some of the above home remedies for nausea. For instance, choose one ginger remedy and take it once or twice a day, plus do the acupressure several times a day. Note also that if you're pregnant and suffering from morning sickness, ginger is one of the most common and safest Chinese home remedies for nausea and vomiting. Check with your health professional first though if you're unsure about this.

In terms of the prevention of kidney stones developing, preventative methods include modifications to the diet, and ensuring that the body is properly hydrated by drinking adequate fluids, in particular water. These include, but are not restricted to:
* Nuts

Effectively speaking, prevention needs to encompass some strict lifestyle changes. Foods that are high in calcium have been traditionally recommended to be cut out of the diet. Less meat poultry and fish is to be eaten and the sufferer must avoid foods that are extremely rich in Vitamin D.
In order to prevent cystine stones, a gallon of water is required to be drunk during a 24 hour period. This includes a third of it being consumed during the night. Imagine, getting up all night long to drink water and urinate?

Tastiest Home Remedy For Cough - Honey

Looking for a home remedy for cough? One that is natural and perhaps easy to go down? Consider the sweet liquid from nature - pure honey.

Now, when you are down with a bout of sickness, for instance, cold, sore throat, or fever, I am sure at one point or another, you have wondered and questioned what's going on in your body, what has gone wrong and is causing those symptoms of discomfort...

An extremely common ailment which probably all of us have experienced before, cough is a vital bodily function and can be technically defined as an involuntary reflex signalled and triggered by our brain to clear a blockage or irritant (e.g phlegm, cigarette smoke, pungent gas, dust, etc) from the air passage. What is visible or audible to us when this happens is a sudden expulsion of air from the lungs that helps clear airway very quickly.

When you complain of having a cough, doctors or pharmacists often like to ask this question: is it chesty or dry? Chesty cough or productive cough is characterised by the presence of mucus or phlegm on the chest, whereas in a dry cough where the throat and upper airways are inflamed or irritated, no phlegm is produced or expelled. In some cases, a cough can be chesty but is not productive. This happens when the phlegm is not loose enough to be coughed up.

Many smokers can have a continual dry cough throughout their lives. A cough caused by a viral infection such as the flu or common cold usually disappears within two weeks; if it does not, it may be a symptom of a more serious problem and x-rays may be necessary to diagnose the problem. Persistent or chronic cough could be caused by environmental irritants or even stress (such a cough disappears while sleeping), but it could also be a sign of viral infection like bronchitis or pneumonia, whereby antibiotic medicine would be required. Signs and symptoms that point to an infection include fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, headache, sinus pressure, runny nose, and night sweats. When cough is a warning sign of an underlying cancer of the lung or air passage, other symptoms may also be present, including worsening fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, or decreased ability to swallow solid or liquid foods.

Over-the-counter cough syrups for minor coughs are easily accessible. There are two primary goals in treating a cough: one is to suppress the cough reflex, especially when a cough causes pain or affects with sleep; the other is to thin the mucus, making it easier to bring up and be flushed from the body. It's beneficial to drink lots of water, warm broth, tea, and room-temperature fruit or vegetable juice to help thin and loosen the mucus.

I notice that across different cultures, home remedy for cough can vary a lot. There is obviously an interesting vast array of recipes for treating cough, but you may not be very comfortable with some of them depending a lot on the beliefs you grow up with (such as the concept of "heaty and cooling foods" which I tend to believe in). Here I would mention a few using honey, one of nature's most precious gifts:

1. Mix equal amount of honey and lemon grass juice then drink to reduce the coughs.

2. Mix a syrup consisting of 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water, mix and drink.

3. Boil some water with 2 garlic cloves, 1 table spoon of oregano. Pour into a cup add 1 tablespoon of honey and drink.

4. Make a lemon and honey drink. Active Manuka honey and propolis have been commonly used as ingredients in the home remedy for cough because of their strong antibacterial properties.

Some researchers believe that honey, a traditional, natural home remedy for cough can offer a "safe and legitimate alternative" to dextromethorphan (DM), which can occasionally cause severe side-effects in children, including muscle contractions and spasms. A study (2007) by researchers from Penn State College of Medicine, US, involved 105 children with coughs between the ages of 2 and 18. Before bed, the children were given artificial honey-flavoured DM cough syrup, buckwheat honey or nothing at all. Results revealed that parents of children who received the honey rated their children's sleep and symptoms as better! Honey's ability as a home remedy for cough may be due to the way it soothes on contact and stimulates saliva. However, please note that honey should not be given to children under age 1 because of a rare but serious risk of botulism.

Why Natural Anti Aging Products Are Better Than Botox

In the natural versus chemical argument, there are strong believers on both sides. Some think that unnatural treatments such as Botox and plastic surgery are the best option for a more youthful appearance. Others argue that natural anti aging products are far better for the skin, and can have equally dramatic results if used as part of a daily skincare routine. Many people who have used a natural anti aging product over time have seen a huge reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, leading to the same effect as expensive chemical treatments offer.
Botox is a bacteria that is injected into the skin to relax the muscles. It therefore reduces things such as frown lines and laughter lines, for temporarily smoother looking skin. However, the effect is not permanent and the treatments are not cheap, so over time these payments can add up and make this an extremely expensive beauty option.
People can spend thousands of pounds on treatments over the years and if they run out of money and can no longer afford to pay for Botox, the effects disappear completely. When using natural anti aging skincare products however they deeply nourish the skin from within, providing long term benefits at a fraction of the cost.
Rather than freezing or relaxing the muscles, or pulling them tighter at some surgeries do, natural age revival products feed the skin cells and help them to regenerate and become more elastic. There is nothing unnatural about them, and no one can argue that nourishing and hydrating your skin could be a bad thing.
Natural skincare products designed as anti aging skincare will typically contain high levels of powerful antioxidants. The super antioxidant Rooibos tea for example and antioxidants Green and White tea work to fight free radicals in the environment which otherwise damage your skin day after day, at an unnoticeable rate that eventually leads to wrinkles. A natural wrinkle reducing product will also contain many highly nourishing vitamins and minerals to help your skin increase its level of collagen, which is the building block of your skin that keeps it soft, smooth and crease free.
Natural anti aging products have excellent rejuvenating properties, giving you a healthy glow for a truly youthful appearance. Not only that, they also work to combat the other signs of aging such as sagging skin, which is pulled taught without the need for needles or surgery, and age spots which are effectively lightened and reduced. Skin brightening products that contain natural fruit enzymes for example reduce uneven pigmentation for a clear and beautiful complexion.
Overall, it is clear that natural anti aging products are the way to go. Botox and chemical treatments are harsh, unnatural choices that can have unwanted side effects and, even if they work well, will leave you out of pocket. A natural anti aging product on the other hand will have the same amazing effects at a fraction of the price. When in doubt, opt for natural skincare products.
Michelle Star writes for Thea Skincare, a natural skincare brand whose range includes natural anti aging products such as creams, cleansers and serums. A natural anti aging product from Thea Skincare will be organically enriched, cruelty free, chemical free, Paraben free and PH balanced for sensitive skin.

Myxedema Madness: When Being Crazy Isn't in Your Head, But in Your Thyroid

Your husband watches in dismay as the men in the white coats chase you about the living room. Finally, with skill befitting a giant botanist, an attendant captures you in a large net and wrestles you to the ground. The second adds his expertise to the effort, his three-hundred-fifty-pound bulk, by sitting squarely atop your skull. You now consider your rage over the fallen flapjack to have been somewhat of an overreaction.
With the straightjacket chaffing at your neck, you call to your husband for help. Though his hesitation is brief, you see the fear in his eyes. He thinks you've lost your mind. You begin to tear up but, in a flash, you see that fatally wounded flapjack laying helplessly on the kitchen floor and the nightmarish rage overtakes you once again. Feeling it all slip away as they carry you to the ambulance, you make one last desperate effort to escape the beds at Bellevue. Looking over your shoulder you spot your husband, take deep breath and shout, "It's not my fault - it's my thyroid!"
Your thyroid? Yes indeed - a condition known as Myxedema Madness mimics many psychiatric conditions.
Myxedema, the medical term for hypothyroidism, is most commonly recognized by well-known physical symptoms: weight gain, puffiness about the face, dry skin, fatigue and a general slowing of the metabolism. However, the emotional signs and symptoms are quite often overlooked. Or, even more disturbingly, are attributed to non-existent mental health and psychiatric conditions.
Myxedema Madness is a catchall phrase, coined by Dr. Richard Asher in 1940, that encompasses a broad swath of emotions ranging from minor anxieties, doubts and worries to full-blown panic attacks and classic psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia. Myxedema Madness typically manifests as a simple bout of depression and is often treated as such, with antidepressants and advice to, "Slow down - take it easy for a bit." Unfortunately, neither the pills nor the pontification strike at the root of the issue.
If let untreated, Myxedema Madness can quickly devolve into a deadly serious condition. Minor anxieties may give way to major psychoses, delusions, hallucinations and paranoia. An otherwise affable person may snap at the slightest annoyance, exhibiting a degree of rage previously unseen. The patient may be diagnosed as schizophrenic, psychotic or manic-depressive.
The risk of misdiagnosis is increased because hypothyroidism inordinately impacts women - particularly women over the age of forty. As a result, the emotional difficulties are often attributed to the "natural" process of aging, possibly due to the empty-nest syndrome, the onset of menopause or other adjustments and changes in life. The elderly, especially those already living in a group home setting, face a doubly difficult task in receiving both the proper diagnosis and treatment for this condition.
That's the bad news. The good news is that diagnosis is actually quite straightforward. A simple blood test is all that's needed to identify a thyroid problem. The best news? When properly treated with a daily thyroid hormone you'll be your old self in no time flat. No more outbursts, no more voices and no more men in white coats. Which, unfortunately, means no more shouting, "It's not my fault - it's my thyroid!"
Yes... modern medicine is a double-edged sword indeed.

20 Ways to Lose Weight

1. Take it one step at a time
Start by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruit and vegetables. After you have that under control, add exercise. If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Also, it will be easier if you chose an activity that you enjoy.
2. Find a friend
It is always good to have support when you are trying to lose weight. Find a friend who wants to lose weight and compare notes, weigh-in together and maybe even have a contest.
3. Use weights
Working out weights will build muscle and raise your metabolism so you will burn more calories. Also, muscle takes up less space than fat so you will be smaller ( but probably weigh more).
4. Eat fewer carbs
Don't eat as much bread and pasta and you will see a difference.
5. Set a goal
Set a deadline to lose the weight and write it down. For example, ' By Dec 14/04 I will weigh 150 lbs or less'. Put it somewhere you will see it daily.
6. Give up soda
If you drink a soda or 2 a day you are adding empty calories. If you find it hard to stop
completely, cut back at first and drink water instead.
7. Grill or boil
Avoid fried meat, grill and use lots of spices. You will get used to it and probably enjoy it more.
8. Don't buy junk food
When you go shopping, don't go on an empty stomach and you will be less likely to buy junk food. Keep your home 'junk food free' so you won't be tempted to indulge.
9. Eat breakfast
Consume most of your calories early in the day and always eat breakfast. Don't eat after 8pm and
not only will you avoid those added calories but you will sleep better.
10. Give yourself a treat
When you tell yourself that you can't have something you want it more. Give yourself a treat once a day ( ie. half a cookie) and you won't feel you are missing out.
11. Use smaller plates
Trick yourself into believing that you are eating more by using a smaller plate.
12. Drink lots of water
Drink water when you are feeling hungry and you will get that 'full' feeling.
13. Don't eat everything on your plate
Many times we eat just because it's there. Pay attention to when you have had enough.
14. Eat five or six meals a day
Eating more frequently will keep you from getting too hungry.
15. Plan your workout sessions
Write your workout sessions in your journal or planner.
16. Stay away from fad diets
Fad diets don't work. If you lose weight fast chances are that you will gain it back ( and more)
just as fast. It takes time to put it on and time to take it off.
17. Do several workouts a day
While you are watching TV do crunches and leg lifts.
18. Measure your food
If you decide to have junk food for a snack - be sure to measure and control what you eat.
19. Keep pre-cut vegetables
...and ward off those cravings.
20. Create Good Habits
It is a known fact that when we do something twenty-one times it becomes a habit. Create good eating habits.

How to Choose the Right Color Nail Polish Based on Your Skin Tone

Just like any beauty style, there are a few basic principles that have to be followed. Similarly, when picking out nail polish colors, there are certain things to take into consideration. Nail polish colors are meant to flatter, or at least complement the skin tone of the wearer. Here's a simple guide to help you choose the right color according to your skin tone.
For Fair Skin
• Women who have fair or light skin can use most colors for their nails. However, there are still differences in fair-skinned women in undertone and shade. Women with skin that's too pale might want to avoid extremely dark colors since they will look much too eye-popping.
• Choose shades that flatter your fair skin, such as pink in either soft or bright shade, a light to medium shade of purple, and red.
• If you're going for a healthy, rosy look, use nail polish in shades of pink.
• Blue-based polish is usually recommended.
For Medium Skin Tone
• Being the middle color, medium tones can wear most shades.
• Medium tones will do well with nail arts since the different colors and prints blend well with their skin color making them look stylish. It is recommended to use nail art designs that have metallic shades.
• Using glitter polish will add a tanned look.
• Using vibrant colors like yellow, blue, orange, or pink will look impressive. Bright shades are the perfect color for this skin tone.
• To emphasize the neutral color of medium tones, you may use metallic and silver versions of a light blue color.
• Avoid navy blue, dark purple, and red.
Dark Skin Tone
• To emphasize the beauty of dark skin tones, nail polish with dark colors should be used. Colors like chocolate brown, dark green, red, or a nice burgundy match the rich color of dark-skinned women.
• Gold also looks good on dark skin making it easy for dark-skinned women to pull off a stylish look with gold polish.
• However, if you want to accentuate tanned skin, lighter shades may be used. Other colors that may work for dark skin are light brown and chocolate, pink, light blue, and purple. Since tan is a sun kissed color, gold nail polish should be avoided as it will blend completely with the overall color of the skin making it invisible. For tan complexion, go for colors found on the warm side of the color chart.
• Yellow-based colors come highly recommended for women who have dark skin tone.
The general rule when matching complexion or skin tone to colors for nail polish is quite simple: dark to dark and light to light. Light skin will look best with light to medium colors while dark skin will look better with medium to deep dark colors.

3 Tips for Taking Care of Curly Hair

Curly hair can be a real bind if you have it. I longed for straight hair that was easy to brush, wash and style. Every time I went to the hairdressers, I would ask them to make it straight. I had all my hair chopped off, investigated chemical straightening products as well as purchased a catalog of straightening tools in the hope that I could make the frizz smooth and sleek like you see on all the TV adverts.
Nowadays, I've come to terms with my curls and have even embraced the frizz. Well, maybe not that far, but I have learned a few tricks that help tame the wild beast that is my curly hair. Hopefully, these will help a few more 'curlies' embrace their own curls.
Tip 1- Do NOT brush your hair.
Sounds crazy doesn't it! Well it's true. Brushing curls, especially when hair is dry will just separate strands of hair from one another. This is fine for straight hair but for curls it just means that each hair will simply 'be curly' on it's own. The result is a head full of frizz. I remember when I was a young girl, my straight-haired mother would brush my curls with a stiff bristle brush. I would not only cry in pain, but also end up looking like a lion that had just had an electric shock!
Only brush it whilst wet, after washing, and even then, only with a wide-toothed comb. Afro combs work well.
Tip 2 - Do NOT dry your hair
Yes, another crazy idea! If your hair is naturally curly and you're going for a curly style, then do not dry with a hairdryer, even if you have a diffuser fitted. This can blow your hair so much that the strands separate again and you'll end up with frizz. Let your hair dry naturally, so that strands of hair group together and you'll get a proper curl. If you must dry your hair, for instance if your hair is quite thick, then just blow dry the roots and let the rest dry naturally.
The exception is if you are styling your hair straight. Blow dry (no diffusion needed) and then use straightening irons.
Tip 3 - Use curl enhancing products
A lot of shampoos, conditioners and styling products cater for those who want sleek, smooth hair so the products often contains relaxing ingredients to help deters frizz. For us curlies, this will make our hair look limp and dull. Go for products that are specifically formulated to enhance curls. Try KMS California Curl Up Conditioner or Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream.
You'll find that after trying a few different products and combinations, you'll hit on the magic combo that works for you. Once found,
 Curly Hair
you'll begin to love your curls like I do and never reach for the straightening irons again!

The 10 Best Anti-Ageing Organic Moisturizers

Our skin, like our other organs, needs to be fed daily with highly nutritious ingredients so that it looks and feels healthy.
And these days both men and women are striving for better glowing complexions and skincare products with a high percentage of organic ingredients do just that.
Organic products are great at feeding the skin, adding nutrients and keeping the skin hydrated and moist.
Excessive dryness of the skin can cause pre-mature ageing and initiate skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and even acne. Skincare moisturizers act as emollients, in other words 'natural skin softeners' and moisturizers.
Moisturizers have three main functions:
  1. They keep the skin moist, nourish the skin and prevent the skin from losing moisture.
  2. They allow the skin to breath, release toxins and take in and release moisture.
  3. They protect the skin from daily external elements and harmful bacteria, helping the skin to heal when it needs to.
The best skin care moisturizers are those derived from ancient old ingredients, that is, from traditional edible plants.
These ingredients offer high skincare nutrition, are easily absorbed by the skin and allow the skin to breath while moisturizing and nourishing the skin.
Here are 10 of the best organic skincare moisturizers that should be found in organic skincare products:
1. Organic Aloe Vera
Organic Aloe Vera is highly moisturizing, soothing, and has skin calming properties and is excellent for dry and sensitive skin and just about any type of skin related problem that you can imagine.

Avocado Oil is an excellent emollient and is used to nourish, smooth and invigorate the skin while helping to transport active nutrients and vitamins to the skin. It has excellent bactericidal and soothing properties and is particularly good for sensitive skin.

Jojoba Oil is referred to as the 'miracle skin care ingredient'.It is particularly effective in adjusting skin imbalances due to excess dryness or oil. Natural Jojoba moisturizes and softens by forming a breathable lipid layer, diffusing into the skin leaving behind a silky feel. 7. Organic Meadowfoam Oil
I refer to Meadowfoam oil as one of the 'new generation' of natural skincare moisturizers. It is widely used in skincare products because it is moisturising, extremely stable, and capable of adhering and staying on the skin. It forms a moisture barrier and will assist the skin with preventing moisture loss and on top of that offers natural ultra violet protection and reduces wrinkles and the signs of ageing.
8. Organic Mango Butter
This exotic, tropical butter is relatively rare in the west, but it is being used more and more in natural skincare products due to its healing, moisturizing and rejuvenating properties. Mango butter rejuvenates skin due to presence of antioxidants. It helps to neutralize toxins, to generate skin cell renewal and prevents wrinkle formation.
Mango Butter also contains natural skin acids, which are excellent natural exoliators and gently remove dead skin from the surface of the body. It also contains nutritious skin vitamins such as vitamin A and high amounts of vitamins E, C, D, group B vitamins, folic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium. And this wonder butter also protects skin from sun damage.
9. Organic Palm Oil
Palm Oil is one of the best natural anti-ageing moisturizers as it contains the hard to find toctrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family. Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that helps the skin to fight free radicals, which damage the skin and cause fine lines and wrinkles. It is added to skin care products not only for its anti-aging properties, but also because it provides deep moisturizing benefits making the skin soft and supple.
10. Organic Shea Butter
Shea Butter is unique because of its high content of fats, which act as a natural skin moisturiser. It is extremely high in Vitamins A, E & F and enhances cell regeneration and capillary circulation. Shea butter also moisturize the skin with all the essential elements it needs for balance, elasticity and tone.

Effective Herbs for Cellulite Removal

Cellulite is of cosmetic concern to women and is not associated with any health risks. Poor circulation of the lymph which carries waste products and toxins from the different tissues to the blood contributes to cellulite formation. There are many natural methods for getting rid of cellulite, herbs being one of them. Herbs are medicinal plants, used to strengthen weakened body systems and boost the body's own healing powers.

Here are some herbs that have been used in the treatment of cellulite removal:

1) Gotu kola is a herb with stimulant properties. It helps the body to produce substances that strengthen the collagen fibers and improve the circulation of blood. Gotu kola reduces and slows down the process of hardening of connective tissues below the skin surface. It strengthens the vein walls, thereby preventing damage and leaking veins. It improves the flexibility of the connective tissue. This in turn improves the skin tone and firmness. The extract of Gotu kola can be used in cream, supplement, and as mesotherapy injection forms for cellulite treatment.

2) Horse chestnut is a herb with anti-inflammatory properties. One of its components, Aescin, decreases the poresize of the capillary walls and improves their tone thereby improving blood flow. This improvement in the tone of the capillaries under the skin reduces the appearance of the cellulite and smoothens the skin.
