Home Remedies for Hypothyroidism

Thyroid gland is a small mass of tissue that is present on either side of the trachea or in general a windpipe. It is one of the most important organs of the human body. The entire body systems run on metabolism and metabolism is controlled majorly by the help of thyroid gland.
Hypothyroidism is the condition that results from malfunctioning of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces insufficient quantity of the thyroid hormone called as thyroxin. This situation is also developed from the pituitary deficiency, but it is generally due to some abnormality in thyroid gland by birth (called as congenital/deformity) anomaly.
There are many ways to treat the thyroid gland. One of the best ways is adopting home remedy. Home remedy starts from your kitchen and undoubtedly helps in preventing, controlling and treating the diseased condition. There are many benefits of home remedies and one out of them is the cost.
Home remedies are comparatively cheaper and affordable than other therapies to treat hypothyroidism. Here are some of the home remedies that can be very effective in treating and controlling the thyroid gland. Many of them do not decrease or increase thyroid function but it regulates the gland to produce enough quantity of hormone.
1 Spirulina is considered as good health booster and thyroid regulator. There are many products available in the market containing this wonderful herb.
2 Take black Cohosh that helps in balancing the estrogen levels and can also be useful in controlling thyroid gland function.
3 Mullein covers and protects the cells and reduces the inflammation of the glands including thyroid gland. This is very useful in case of goiter.
4 Agnus castus can support the pituitary gland and can help balancing estrogen that is known to interfere with normal thyroid functions.
5 Siberian Ginseng is very useful for adrenal and thymus glands and therefore also helpful to support thyroid health.
6 Another good home remedy for thyroid gland is to have primrose oil. This is the fatty acid that restores the functions of the thyroid gland.
7 Regular intake of vitamin B complex is extremely helpful in treating thyroid conditions. Taking them also prevent other minor diseases. You should include green leafy vegetables. Vitamin B complex can also be taken as pills. It improves the cellular oxygenation and gives us energy. The group provides immunity and rejuvenates the body.
8 Bladder wrack is rich in natural iodine. This will be very beneficial in preventing and treating various thyroid disorders.
9 Food from the kitchen that contains calcium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, terbium, and neodymium are very useful minerals and trace elements those are necessary for the good health of thyroid gland.
10 Go for the low calorie food. Cut down on cakes, biscuits, sweets and alcoholic drinks those are relatively high in calories but low in nutrients.
11 Go for the food that is rich in vitamin A like yellow vegetables, eggs, carrots and dark green leafy vegetables that are thyroid boosters.

Is a Skin Tag Remover Safe?

A skin tag remover is fairly self explanatory. It removes skin tags. But there are a whole bunch of different acrochordon (the medical name) removers to choose from that it can sometimes be confusing as to which ones are the best and safest. In this article I'll try and address some of the concerns and safety issues with skin tag removers. Which is the best skin tag remover is a common question that I'll also try and answer.
Ever since I hit my thirties I've been getting these skin flaps. This is common to most men and women who are reaching middle age. And it affects folks who are heavier to a greater degree. Yet another reason to lose excess weight and try and keep to your best weight! But this article isn't an article about weight loss, but about how to remove a skin bump and what to keep in mind as far as safety is concerned.
Most skin tag removal methods are grouped into 3 main areas. All methods are really a way to remove a skin tag naturally. Natural skin flap remover can be divided into applications, surgery or tying off or cutting off the circulation to the skin tag itself.
It is important with all of these methods that common hygiene methods are followed. You are after all dealing with skin. Obviously with surgery, you'll want to make sure that the area is clean before surgery but also be sure to keep it clean after surgery too.
If using topical applications the same advice should be followed. Keep the area clean especially before applying the topical solution, and be sure to apply it as indicated which will often require several applications over the course of treatment. When cutting off circulation or tying off the skin flap, be sure to keep the thread or string clean and clean the are before hand too. Also be sure to allow the skin growth to be retied with clean string at least once a day or so.
The best way I have found as a skin tag remover is a natural method that I can use in the comfort of my own home.
Removing these skin flaps is not that hard if you take a few precautions and use some common sense cleanliness. I'm not sure why we get skin tags as we get older. But I don't like them, and getting them removed is not hard. I've used a variety of methods, but the best way I have found is a common method of getting rid of this excess skin that I can use in the comfort of my own home. It's painless and easy and only takes a matter of days or at the most weeks. So don't be intimidated, this is not something you need to worry your doctor about.
I found that I got a whole bunch of skin bumps ever since I reached my thirties. They're really annoying, but I've found that the best skin tag remover is the one I can use in the comfort of my home. It's easy, cheap and painless. Just what I needed.

Does Sun Exposure Cause Skin Cancer?

There are a lot of tales told about skin health. One of the most damaging is that sun exposure causes skin cancer. As you'll see in a moment, this is simply not true.
Melanoma is the form of skin cancer the media likes to refer to when they want to scare the dickens out of the public about the dangers of sun exposure. There are a number of reports of the fact that melanoma has been steadily increasing over the last 20 years. Most dermatologists will say this increase is due to the fact that more people are getting far too much sun exposure in their younger years.
A closer look at the matter, however, reveals a far different story. Skin cancer awareness programs have been effective at increasing the number of people undergoing full-body screening exams, and the result is a huge increase in the number of skin biopsies being performed. It seems that even with biopsies there is still considerable confusion and disagreement among pathologists when it comes to identifying melanoma. It's apparently not a cut-and-dried diagnosis.
Looking at the same tissue, one pathologist will see a benign lesion while another will see it as melanoma. Thus, the dramatic increase in biopsies has led to more melanoma diagnoses, many of which are false, as a new study shows.
The study, conducted by doctors at Dartmouth Medical School, found that there has been a 250% increase in skin biopsies since 1986-which just happens to be roughly the same percentage increase in the number of people diagnosed with early-stage melanoma. These researchers became skeptical about the rise in melanoma after they noticed that over that time there hasn't been any increase in deaths from melanoma or any increase in the number of advanced cases of the disease.
Plain and simple, there has not been an actual increase in the overall incidence of melanoma. The apparent increase is due merely to improved detection because of the increased number of screening procedures and subsequent biopsies, which by the way, hasn't led to any increase in survival or cure rates.
Much like cancers of the prostate, breast, and lung, the more doctors look for cancer, the more likely they will find it and the number of false diagnoses will also increase.
If you or someone you know is diagnosed with melanoma, I would definitely suggest getting a second or possibly even a third opinion.
Obviously, excessive exposure that results in sunburn isn't a benefit at all. However, moderate amounts of sunlight, along with a varied diet containing nature's natural protective anti- oxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids (omega-3s) is actually beneficial and has been shown to help prevent many forms of cancer-including skin cancer.
Lifetime sun exposure was actually shown to result in a lower risk of developing melanoma. (I Invest Dermatol 03;120(6):1087-1093) Past studies have shown that individuals who utilize sun exposure reasonably have a lower incidence of colon and breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, hip and vertebra fractures, et cetera.
Over 20 years ago it was discovered that vitamin D has an "anti-proliferative" effect on cells. In other words, vitamin D can stop cells from multiplying out of control (i.e., from developing into cancer). The body has only two sources for vitamin D. The first is from oily foods (vitamin D is fat-soluble) such as oily fish, organ meats, and eggs. The second is from your own skin cells, which use the same "cancer-causing" UV rays from the sun to convert a form of cholesterol into vitamin D.
Not surprisingly, those who consume more fish and omega- 3 foods have a reduced incidence of melanoma, while those consuming more of the omega-6 oils (the vegetable oils that are now so pervasive throughout our food supply) have increased rates of melanoma and other skin cancers.
A couple of other chemicals that your skin makes when it has adequate exposure to the UV rays of the sun. The function of these two vitamin D-related compounds, lumisterol and tachysterol, isn't yet fully understood. It's possible that they're associated with helping prevent blood sugar problems and obesity.
Avoiding sunlight puts you at a far greater health risk than exposing yourself moderately. Dr. William Grant, one of the top researchers on this subject, has studied the relationship between sunlight and health for years. He's found that every year 47,000 individuals in this country die from 16 different types of cancer due to insufficient vitamin D, whereas 8,000 die of melanoma and another 2,000 die from other skin cancers.
Furthermore, pale skin, numerous moles, smoking, a diet high in fat and low in fruits and veg- etables, and frequent sunburns are all stronger predictors of later skin cancer than UV exposure. As with most things, moderation is the watchword. Enjoy your time in the sun every day and prepare your body with an adequate intake of the right fatty acids.

Gallbladder Detox and Gallstone Flush

According to the Dept. of Health and Human Services, there are an estimated 20 million Americans that suffer from gallstones. Gallstones develop in the gallbladder. This small pear shaped organ that is below your liver breaks down fats and dissolves excess cholesterol. Some of the symptoms of gallstones can include: severe pain in the upper abdomen, severe pain under the right shoulder or in the right shoulder blade, nausea, vomiting, and indigestion after eating certain types of fatty foods. Diets high in fat can cause gallstones due to increased cholesterol in the bile and reduced gallbladder emptying. You can avoid gallstones by avoiding certain foods such as all animal fats in meat, dairy products with high fat, hydrogenated oils, sodas, and foods rich in sugar. Gallstones can be detected by your doctor through an ultrasound. Most people are likely to have hundreds of gall stones. They are soft and don't show up on an x-ray unless they calcify. However, they cause problems such as gall bladder attack by blocking the bile ducts even when they are not calcified. The most common treatment for gallbladder gallstones is a surgery procedure called cholecystectomy. Here is a natural remedy for the effective removal of gallstones. This gallstones home remedy is safe and can also be used with a liver cleanse.
*Step 1
9am- 2pm
You may want to set aside a couple of days off work, or begin this on a Friday. This way you have the weekend to recover and are in the comfort of your own home. (warning: diarrhea will occur during this cleanse)
Eat a high fiber, non-fat breakfast and lunch on the day of your cleanse. I had an apple with a cup of oatmeal for breakfast, and a green salad with plenty of veggies for lunch (broccoli works great)
What is happening in your digestive system at this time? Bile is being produced in your liver. Bile is a fluid that helps the body eliminate waste.
Do not eat after 3pm!!
*Step 2
You might want to cancel any outside activities from this time on.
Dissolve 1 tbsp of Epsom salt in 1 cup of water. Drink this entirely within 2-5 minutes.
Drink another mixture of 1 tbsp of Epsom salt and 1 cup of water. You may experience diarrhea symptoms after this since the Epsom salt works as a laxative.
*Step 3
Squeeze the juice from 1 grapefruit into a pint size jar. Pour 1/2 cup of olive oil into the jar. Close the lid to the jar tightly and shake vigorously for 5 min. The olive oil will have completely dissolved and will be easy to drink. You may use a straw to drink the mixture or drink right out of the jar. Once you have drank the entire mixture you will need to lie down immediately on your back with your head raised slightly. (place 2 pillows if necessary under your head and go straight to sleep)
*Step 4
6am- the following morning
Drink another mixture of 1 tbsp of Epsom salt and 1 cup of water. You may be experiencing trips to the bathroom from this time until noon. Watch for the gallstones during this time. They can be easily identified as pea sized (they may appear bigger or smaller) stones that float to the top because of the cholesterol content in each. There are countless pictures of gallstones online that give you an idea of what to look for.
Repeat this flush once every 2 weeks until symptoms improve. Do not try this more than 2 times in a row. Let your body rest for about a month or so until you give it another try. I have personally benefited from this remedy and have since prevented gallstones by maintaining a low-fat diet combined with exercise.

9 Great Home Remedies For Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis results when allergies like dust, pet dander, pollen, smoke attack your immune system and cause congestion, stuffy/runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. It also involves itchy eyes and nose. Treatment involves easing the symptoms and avoiding exposure to irritants and allergens. It is a very common problem in pollen season and that's why is often referred to as 'hay fever'. People having chronic / perennial allergic rhinitis suffer these symptoms throughout the year. Mild cases can be treated with antihistamines available over the counter. However if the symptoms are severe then allergy shots may be prescribed.
In most countries, allergic rhinitis is at its peak and very common during pollen season. Hence it is advisable to be cautious and begin the required medication and treatment before the beginning of the season and prepare yourself. Most important is to fortify your immune system for which most important is vitamin C. Have vitamin C rich foods in your daily diet such as freshly squeezed orange juice, pineapples, tomato soup. Vitamin A is also very important for strengthening mucus membranes. Include carrots in your daily diet.
Avoid inflammation aggravating foods such as dairy products, meat, wheat, sugar and lots of salt. And have foods that are anti-inflammatory and have antioxidants including beans, vegetables and fruits.
9 home remedies for allergic rhinitis
1. It is vital to avoid exposure to allergens and to create allergen free environment.
2. Your room, furniture, sofas, mattresses, carpets, rugs should be dusted and cleaned regularly.
3. Place air purifiers and humidifiers/dehumidifiers in your room. The correct humidity level of 45% - 50% should be maintained inside. Too much humidity and too less are both bad for this condition and aggravate symptoms.
4. Use saline nasal wash to keep your nasal passage moist and to clear mucus.
5. Steam inhalation has been used for hundreds of years to clear nasal passage and loosen mucus. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or peppermint to the steaming water and inhale the vapors.
6. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, 6-8 glasses of room temperature water, soups, broth.
7. Having freshly produced unfiltered honey relieves allergic rhinitis.
8. Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon each of honey and lemon and briefly heat it. Have 1 teaspoon of this mixture three times daily to treat your hay fever.
9. Consult a practitioner before having any supplements. For instance probiotic supplements are known to ease the severity of the condition. Herbal preparation such as biminne has been known to effectively relieve symptoms. Indian gooseberry and Echinacea pills available over the counter are also known to naturally strengthen immune system. But it is recommended to consult your physician before doing self medication.

Healthy Skin, Hair and Teeth - Benefits of a Healthy Diet

Healthy Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and the most exposed. Most people don't take proper care of their skin - either due to hectic work or due to pure ignorance.
Vitamins A, C, E, selenium, and zinc are especially important to maintain beautiful and healthy skin. Foods that are rich in these vitamins and minerals include:
Citrus fruits
Olive oil
Sunflower seeds
This is just a partial list of foods rich in the vitamins and minerals you need for healthy skin. Foods and drinks you need to eliminate or reduce your consumption of include alcohol, sugar, and saturated fat. Coffee and tea should be limited to two cups a day.
Since the skin often mirrors the health of the whole body, eating a healthy diet provides you a healthy body and as an extra benefit, healthy skin.
Healthy Hair
Healthy hair depends on eating foods high in protein and certain vitamins and minerals. Inadequate protein intake over a lengthy period can force hair into the resting phase with shedding a few months later. Five amino acids are of particular relevance to hair growth - cystine, cysteine, methionine, arginine and lysine.
There a number of different specific hair vitamins and minerals that can play a major role in helping a person have a healthy head of hair. Vitamins necessary for healthy hair include vitamins A, B6, biotin, inositol, and folic acid. Minerals needed to good hair growth are magnesium, sulphur, silica and zinc.
Extra hair vitamins are likely to be needed if a person is generally unwell or is undernourished as their hair will show damage and may even stop growing. For example, brittle hair is an indication of iron deficiency while prolonged and severe hair loss can mean inefficient functioning of the liver or the thyroid.
Healthy Teeth
The health of your teeth and gums, the lack of plaque and debris, and the freshness of your breath can be a constant reminder of the status of your overall health. A healthy body generally means healthy teeth as well.
As with promoting healthy skin and healthy hair, eating healthy foods (such as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables) also helps encourage healthy teeth. These foods tend to help scrub the plaque off of our teeth before it can turn into tartar. It is tartar that can cause pockets in the gums where bacteria can take root and cause decay.
Vitamin C deficiencies can result in bleeding gums and loose teeth as well as mouth sores The Vitamin B complex is also essential to a healthy mouth as deficiencies can cause cracking and bleeding of the lips as well as open sores and lesions on both the inside and outside of the mouth.
Calcium is the super nutrient that keeps bones and teeth strong. Vitamin D is another important factor in keeping our teeth and bones healthy. Spending a total of about one hour each week in the sun will normally provide you all the vitamin D you need.
Besides causing other problems with our health, too much fluoride can cause permanent staining of our child's teeth. It can also cause brain degeneration and certain cancers. So be very careful to rinse completely after brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and after a fluoride treatment at the dentist.
There's no way around it. The only way to have healthy skin, healthy hair and healthy teeth is to give your body the vitamins, minerals and protein it needs by heating a healthy and well-rounded diet.

How to Get Rid of Negative Feelings

Negative feelings are one the worst things we can experience as a human being. And you might be reading this because you have some sort of negative feeling(s) that you have or encounter on a daily basis. I may know what you're going through right now the thing is I'm just like you.
There is not a day that goes by in my life where I do not encounter negative feelings. I've probably tried hundreds of different ways to cope with them, from trying my best not to think of a negative thought when it comes around the corner to reframing my thoughts into something else.
But no matter what, my negative feelings still keep coming like a tidal wave one after another.
Before you submerge yourself into another method of how to get rid of negative feelings, I want to share what has helped me. I can truly say that if you can master this, then you'll be able to handle your negative feelings a lot better in the long run, rather than just deal with the symptoms for a brief moment(e.g. do something, it goes away, it comes back later, repeat, etc.).
The key to getting rid of negative feelings isn't a giant mystery, but many people get angry, depressed, jealous, irritated, anxious, confused, and worried over things that may seem impossible to overcome. It would be pretty nice if we could stay detached to our emotions and not let them affect us and our thinking, but emotions are part of the body; they here to stay. And since we think about hundreds if not thousands of thoughts per day, it's natural that a few of those thoughts can affect how we feel. The biggest one being fear.
  • Fear that we cannot do it...
  • Fear that it will not work...
  • Fear that this is impossible...
  • Fear that this is not for me...
  • Fear that we are always out of luck...
  • Fear that we will never win...
When this happens, our imaginations run wild with more negative thoughts, and this can totally cause our bodies to go beyond just negative feelings. Do you ever feel so out of sync with yourself that you start to analyze every different rational way just to get a hold of your emotions? Then what happens is you're so in the midst of analyses paralyses that your body actually because paralyzed? At this point the mere process of just taking action is not even an option anymore.
If you're a person who constantly finds themselves analyzing your feelings, what you need to do is stop. This will always cause you to have negative emotions. They won't go away just because you started to reframe your thoughts into something differently. What happens when another similar situation comes up? What happens if it's worse? Will you have to come up with another hundred ways until you reframe your negative thoughts and feelings into something else?
I used do this a lot for hours and the end result was always the same; either staying the same place where I was hours ago or backtracking.
For example:
"I'm afraid that people will think lowly of me if I do something wrong."
This is negative thinking will cause tension in your body, and you're body will then tell your subconscious to stop working. Then your mind go into a mode where all you are doing is battling with yourself endlessly through heated analyses.
  • "Why would people think lowly of me?"
  • "Who are these people?"
  • "Should I keep going?"
  • "Just go!"
  • "What do I need to do?"
All this talk of analyzing the situation is useless...
If you want to get rid of negative thinking, do not battle your body with your other thoughts! What you need to do is start trying to be in complete harmony with your body. They should be an aligned, not disjointed.
In other words: just be.
When a negative situation comes up, such as a negative thought or a negative emotion; let it be.
Nothing outside of your physical body is actually happening; everything is going on inside of you.
When you feel worry, anxiety, or fear, let it be. Accept that it's there; don't try to fight it.
When any negative situation comes, be prepared for it, be aware of it, but most importantly, be conscious of it.
Sometimes when this happens, you'll absolutely need to stop what you're doing and go somewhere where it's completely silent and just sit there being undisturbed by. This may take 1 hour; this may take 10 minutes. It depends on how strong the negative emotion is but whatever you do, don't try to fight your negative feelings.
Don't question it, don't analyze it, don't talk about it, and don't obsess or think about it.
Just be.
Be aware of your feelings and allow them run through your body. As hard as it may be at first, if you can do this, then you will be able to channel that negative energy into something positive later on.
Understand that whatever thought caused the uncomfortable you are having, you first accept that it is what it is. The second thing is being conscious of how that makes you feel? Specifically where is the feeling located? Do you feel in it in your chest, your arms; your whole body? Maybe you can't even identify where it is because the feeling moves from place to place in your body.
Don't go into an emotional tantrum like some people do. This just feeds into the negative feelings even more. Just stay still. Recognize these feelings and actually feel them.
This may be contrary to what people belief, but the truth is your not escaping your feelings. You're facing them straight on.
As you're feeling them, say to yourself, "I understand that this is what I am thinking about right now, and I understand that this is what I'm feeling right now. I accept this."
To really understand how to accept something, sometimes you won't even need words at all; you won't even need to say what is written above. Words may cause even more trouble if you start talking within your mind again. It should be silent.
You just are just being at the moment.
You are absorbing whatever happens to be the case.
Whatever you are thinking and feeling, you accept.
If you don't know something, then you don't know. Accept the feeling of not knowing something. If you truly accept something for what it is, you should feel an instant calmness to you.
Anger, jealous, curiosity, and fear should slowly dissipate from your body and you should be able to think more clearly and logically on what to do next once these feelings are gone.
You're not fighting your negative feelings; you're absorbing them and being in sync with them.
The more you are able to do this, the easier it becomes. It's definitely a skill that is worth investing in my opinion because if you can learn to accept the small negative feelings that you are having, then you will be able to learn how to deal with bigger negative feelings the next time it comes. But you'll be prepared when the 83th negative situation comes up, you'll be so completely detached from it that you'll simply brush it off and move on. That's what you're working up to.
It definitely beats taking pills from doctors that are just a temporarily relief. If you can't accept the first negative feeling, then you won't be able to get through the others. You'll constantly have to rely on short term alternative routes to escape the uncomfortable.
I've always disregarded the quote, "No pain, no gain." I've heard so many quotes in my lifetime that sometimes I just neglect them. But this quote sums it up.
Each time you feel a negative feeling, it may be painful but accept it. You're battling it; you're absorbing it. You're gaining ground each time you do this and by the time the 83rd negative situation comes you; you'll be so detached to it that you'll just move on. You'll be indifferent.
The real question isn't how to get rid of negative feelings? People who try to "get rid of it" in my opinion, are taking the wrong first step and will have a hard time doing so because you're in constant battle with something that's naturally a part of you.
Emotions are not something where you can just "remove" or "erase" as you're not getting rid of anything.
You're absorbing something and putting it for better use later on.
And the key to doing this first understand it and accept it. Allow to to be there.
Or to put it how I'd liked to put it: just be.
By doing this, you'll be able to conquer your negative feelings, move forward, and be prepared when the next one comes up.

How To Get Rid Of Migraine Headaches Without Aspirin

Migraine headaches can be debilitating. They are by far the most severe headaches you can have. A migraine often starts with light sensitivity and is sometimes accompanied by nausea or vomiting. The severe headache will begin shortly after these symptoms have started. Over the counter medications such as aspirin may do little to help ease the pain. Natural migraine remedies can effectively relieve the severe pain without the side effects of drugs.
As soon as you feel the first symptoms of a migraine attack, drink a caffeinated beverage. While caffeine has been thought to trigger a migraine, once it starts the caffeine will actually help by opening up constricted blood vessels. Make sure you drink plenty water for the duration of the headache. Even mild dehydration can worsen headache symptoms.
A warm shower or bath may help at the onset of the symptoms. If you are not able to take a shower, try putting a cool compress on your head. Sit quietly in a darkened room. This will help ease light or noise sensitivity as well as nausea. A face massage can ease the headache pain and stimulate blood circulation. A warm foot soak is also good for blood circulation.
Some herbal remedies are known to prevent or ease a migraine headache. Dried herbs can be used to make teas or tinctures. Herbal extracts are potent and need to be diluted before use. Capsules come in many herbal combinations and are readily available at most natural or health food stores.
Feverfew - Feverfew contains substances that inhibit the release of mood hormones in the brain. For best results, use fresh feverfew. When this is not available, consume as tea or in capsule form.
Bay - There have been some doctors who recommend taking feverfew with bay to prevent a migraine headache. You can often find a combination of these herbs at most health food stores.
Ginger - Ginger has long been known to relieve and prevent headaches. It is an anti-inflammatory and has substances that help reduce pain. Take in capsule form, according to directions.
Peppermint - Taken internally or used externally, peppermint can help to relieve a migraine headache. To take internally, drink peppermint tea. To use externally, mix several drops of peppermint oil with lotion or body oil and massage into the temples.
In order to prevent a migraine, you need to identify what causes it. Many foods can trigger an attack. These include cheese, chocolate, wheat and caffeine. If you indulge in one of these foods and experience a migraine attack 24 hours later, the food is most likely a migraine trigger. Other triggers include stress, changes in sleeping patterns, hormonal changes and changes in altitude.
Natural migraine remedies can help reduce the length and severity of a migraine headache. Not all natural migraine cures work for everyone, so try various remedies until you find the     ones that work best for you. Finally, learn to control the triggers to avoid getting a migraine

Suffering From Bad Smelling Gas? It Could Be Lactose Intolerance

Have you ever noticed that milk has an inherently mild sweet taste? If you never had plain milk, you may not have noticed. Try plain milk and observe the taste.
This is because milk has a type of sugar called lactose. Lactose is one of the many types of sugars or simple carbohydrates that are found in different food sources.
Lactose cannot be absorbed during digestion as it is. It needs to be broken down The human small intestine produces an enzyme called lactase. The function of lactase is to break down lactose into glucose and galactose. Both of which are simple sugars, which can be easily absorbed through the small intestinal wall.
About 10% of the population do not produce enough lactase to properly digest a glass of milk.
When you don't have enough lactase, residual lactose makes its way to the large intestine. There unfriendly bacteria feed on lactose and produce lots of gas. This could easily turn into foul-smelling gas.
Along with gas, it will also produce bloating, stomach discomfort and other symptoms. Many times it can cause diarrhea also, because the large intestine reacts to the large amount of lactose with releasing lots of water.
The symptoms usually appear anywhere between 1 to 4 hours after consuming the milk or dairy products. It takes about that much time for the bacterial fermentation or the colon reaction to start.
Lactose is present in milk and any product that is derived from milk. Lactose is present in milk, yogurt, cheese, kefir, sour milk, buttermilk, butter, whey, curd, milk solids, dried milk and anything else made using milk. The amount of lactose will vary. Hardened cheese has less lactose, butter has less lactose and milk has the highest.
Many people are tempted to self-diagnose lactose intolerance. It is recommended that you see a medical professional to confirm the diagnosis. Typically you will be administered a certain breath test. Diagnosis is done using the breath test results in conjunction with the observable symptoms with the dairy products.
Lets say that you are suffering from foul-smelling flatulence and you found that you have lactose intolerance. What do you do now? Do you give up dairy completely? You have a few choices.
There is a debate raging in the scientific community about whether we should be consuming any dairy at all. Some people believe that although human milk is essential for infants, we should not consume cow's milk. They believe cow's milk is for calf and not for humans.
This article is not the place to settle this debate. I will make some concrete recommendations for you.
If you have consumed dairy for calcium, you don't need to. We don't need dairy products for our calcium requirements. It is possible that consuming dairy products can make you lose more calcium.
Best source of calcium is leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, collard greens and okra. It is best to limit just the milk or cheese for special occasions. It may be helpful to consume dairy products with live cultures, like yogurt, kefir and buttermilk more often.
You should check with your parents and grandparents. Find out in your culture or family history how dairy was used in the past. There are some ethnic groups who use dairy more than others and have done for ages. They probably have good genetic buildup to support dairy use. In general dairy is not for everyone.
As indicated above, you have an option to give up dairy. If you decide to give up dairy, make sure you get enough vitamin D from other sources. Dairy products are fortified with vitamin D and are a big source. But you don't have to worry about calcium and never need to take calcium supplements.
Another option is to go for lactose free dairy products. The recommendation is to use it sparingly.
You can also try a lactase supplement that you can use right before consuming dairy.
Do not use dairy products by itself. Rather consume dairy products along with the meal or other food that have some fat and protein. The idea is that if you drink milk by itself, you overwhelm the areas in the small intestine responsible for lactose breakdown.
But if you consume milk with other foods that have protein and fat, you slow down the digestion process and the small intestine has to deal with a gradual load of lactose rather than a sudden dump.
Lactose intolerance usually means you don't produce enough lactase for lactose processing. You still produce lactase. Lactase production never completely stops in anyone. This means you can tolerate small amounts of dairy. One has to experiment, but usually less than 4 Oz is okay without any discomforting symptoms.
In summary if you are suffering from frequent foul-smelling gas, it is likely that you may be lactose intolerant. You should rule out this possibility. If you happen to have this intolerance, I have provided with you few options to deal with the condition.

Using Essential Oils to Prevent Wrinkles - If You Are Over 50

Using Essential Oils to Prevent Wrinkles - If You Are Over 50
I love the little story about the granddaughter who looked at her grandmother's wizened face, traced some of the lines with her finger, and said: "Oh grandma, what beautiful lines on your face." So let's just be positive about this! We did earn these lines, didn't we? Yes, wrinkles ARE a sign of aging. They are a symbol of wisdom. Why is it, then, that we do everything possible to keep them away? Oh, that youthful appearance. So desired. So coveted that we consider drastic measures like facelifts, and risk horrible outcomes by letting people put injections in our face to plump up our skin. Hopefully this article will give you some safe, natural ways to ward off those signs of aging.
Just like the old adage says, beauty is more than skin deep. Many factors are involved in keeping that elastic skin that looks youthful and glowing. But when we look at skin, we can truly see the effects of a healthy or not-so-healthy lifestyles. If you have spent long days out in sun, smoked or overused alcohol, or ate a high-fat diet loaded with artificial ingredients, succumbed to insomnia and stress, or abused your skin with over-manipulation or cleaning, people will be able to see a lasting impression of this mistreatment.
Fortunately the skin can renew itself, although it takes longer as we grow older. So it is never too late to change from an abusive to a healthy lifestyle. Start working from the inside out by internal cleansing and drinking adequate amounts of water. As you start eating foods rich in anti-oxidants, vegetables containing vitamins A,B,C,E and zinc, you will even begin to feel the skin's positive response. Regular exercise will help increase metabolism and circulation, deep breathing exercises will help bring needed oxygen to the cells.
You can also help bring blood flow and vitality to the skin with regular brushing of the skin to remove dead cells and dry skin. This is very rejuvenating. Start with a soft bristled brush, put a couple of drops of essential oils such as lavender or myrtle, and brush the whole body in a circular or figure eight pattern. Brush toward the heart. It is especially good to brush before a shower or bath. Facial masks are very moisturizing and excellent cleaners. Ask your aromatherapist about what is best for your particular skin type, and needs, but for mature skin and wrinkles, this mask is recommended:
Natural Facial Mask for Wrinkles
1 tsp. fine oatmeal
1 tsp. fine cornmeal
1 tsp. honey
1 tsp. natural yogurt
1/2 tsp. Brewer's yeast
2 drops Myrtle essential oil
1 drop Galbanum essential oil
1 drop Frankincense essential oil
1 drop Myrrh essential oil.
Mix the first five ingredients together with enough floral or distilled water to make a paste. Then stir in the essential oil and mix well. Put this on your fingertips, and then massage it gently onto your face with upward movements. Do not rub hard, and avoid the eyes. Leave it on for about 20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water to remove. Spray with a gentle mist to your face.
And now finally, here is the wrinkle prevention oil specifically for people over 50:
Wrinkle Prevention Oil If You Are Over 50
1 Tbsp Apricot Kernel Oil
1 tsp Evening Primrose or Kukui Oil
1 tsp Wheatgerm Oil
3 Drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil
4 Drops Neroli Essential Oil
4 Drops Myrtle Essential Oil
3 Drops Galbanum Essential Oil
2 drops Myrrh Essential Oil
1 Drop Rose Essential Oil (for women) or
1 Drop Jasmine Essential Oil (for men)
2 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil
Combine these ingredients in a 1-ounce dark glass bottle. Cap the bottle and mix gently. Label with the ingredients and instructions. Apply 2-4 drops of the blend onto your fingertips, and apply to a moistened face and neck. Work upward, gently massaging the facial tissue.

How to Reduce Uric Acid Levels in Blood - Cure Gout Naturally

Did you know that you can cure gout naturally by learning how to reduce uric acid levels in the blood? The average gout sufferer does not know this interesting fact. And the reason is because most doctors do not tell them now to treat this type of arthritis naturally.
Because gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis, I believe that it is your right to be well informed about your disease and how you can fully treat and prevent it from ever coming back. By the end of this article, you will have learned how to reduce the uric acid levels in your blood and how to say good bye to the pain in hours.
Why Curing Gout is Simple
The traditional treatment for this type of arthritis is to take expensive painkiller to lessen the pain and reduce the swelling in your toe. Some doctors have even prescribed an expensive air cast that allows you to walk but keep your toe stationary. This is an expensive and painful route.
The alternative treatment is exactly the opposite. Knowing that gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the body, natural remedies work to flush the uric acid and dissolve the uric crystals that are causing the pain.
Therefore, traditional treatments temporarily work by numbing the pain. Natural remedies work by curing the cause of gout... too much uric acid in the blood and dissolving the crystals that are lodged between your joints.
Here are some tips to begin your alternative treatment.
How to Cure Gout Naturally
There are numerous ways you can flush uric acid and even prevent it from forming. The following tips will help you treat gout naturally.
1. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water will naturally flush uric acid out of your body through your urine. You should drink at least 12 glasses of water throughout the whole day. Keep your urine clear!
2. Baking soda has been shown to increase the solubility of uric acid which allows the body to excrete it more readily. You should mix a half teaspoon of baking soda with 8 ounces of water.

Makeup Tips For Women Over 30

Women over the age of 30 have their own unique challenges when it comes to make up and I am looking to address the following:
-What colors are right for me (ex. how do women pick the right
shades that compliment their eyes and skin tone)?
-Am I too old to wear trendy shades?
-How do I apply eyeshadow, blush, foundation etc.
-What are the key tools necessary to get the best evening look?
-Solutions for common mistakes women over 30 make.
-Are there any rules that women in their 30s, 40s, 50s+ should be
I have been in the industry for over 14 years, and I get these questions all the time. The main thing to remember is that makeup should be fun--it is what you make it! Do not look to others for rules...if it feels good to you and makes you feel good about yourself, that is what's important.
-What rules do you use for women over 40?
I really dislike it when people who tell women over 40 "don't wear shimmer!!" It's hogwash. Of course women over 40 can wear shimmer. Just don't overdo it--make sure the product is finely milled and is very high quality. Shimmer actually makes the skin look fresh and dewey, which is exactly what skin over 40 needs!!! It's all about choosing a product that is right for you--not about adhering to "rules". Don't buy the cheap stuff--it will look like glitter, and that's not cute. A Radiance Booster is a perfect example. It gives a golden glow to the skin without looking like you have anything on.
-What Colors Are Right For Me? Am I too old to wear trendy shades?
This is my most asked question. I give the same answer every time: what colors do you like? What colors are you passionate about? This is your starting point. Never wear something because someone tells you to. You need to be comfortable in it. If it is a color you are passionate about, and that you love, it will work--I guarantee. So, put away the "rules" about eye colors and what colors work best for whom. Let's make makeup work for you by using colors that you like, that you are comfortable in--even if it's blue!!! The key is to not overdo it. If you like blue, use a small amount as an eyeliner, not all over the eye. Or, use it as an accenting color. Be subtle, not brash (unless that's the look you're going for!!!)
-How do I apply eyeshadow, blush, foundation etc?
Keep it simple: Always use a base for the eyes. It brightens the eyes and gives longer life to your products. Then, take a bone or nude color all over the eyes. Take a darker color like brown or a shimmery dark color and blend it on the bottom half of the eye. The key is to blend makeup, don't just place it on the skin. Blending it (applying a back and forth motion) makes it last longer, and look better. Then apply eyeliner and mascara, and that is a simple, glamorous look that is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
-Blush is simple: use a very small amount on the front of the cheek, and blend it out.
-Foundation: always use moisturizer first...then, apply a powder foundation. It will even out the skin tone, eradicate redness, while feeling like you have nothing on. Foundation should be a tad lighter than your skin tone. Dark foundation will age you, so when in doubt, go a little lighter, and you can always change the tone or color with bronzer.
-What are the key tools necessary to get the best evening look?
Honestly, women have been raving Radiance boosters. It is an all-in-one product for eyes, lips, and face. It adds glamour and glow without looking like you have anything on. You simply dust it over your face with a brush, and you will take ten years off your face! It's luxurious, glamorous and simple!
-Solutions for common mistakes women over 30 make?
I think women are nervous with makeup after the age of 30. They lose their sense of adventure, and decide to go safe. This is fine, but remember: makeup is supposed to be fun-to accentuate who you are!!! I think the biggest mistake is that women over 30 and 40 go into "neutral" mode. Meaning, they only buy neutral colors. Some solutions to this are to buy a shimmery steel grey. This color looks good on ANYONE! Or a shimmery Bronze. Again, you can't go wrong with this color, and it will add some adventure to your makeup wardrobe!

Drinking Water, Hemorrhoids and Alcohol Consumption

There is a lot to be shared about the connection between drinking water, hemorrhoids (piles) and excessive alcohol consumption. The news media, health blogs and healthy living magazines constantly remind people to drink more water for better health.
We all know water is better for us than soda, sugary drinks and all the other liquids most people prefer to drink than simple water. But we all have cravings. I used to drink lots of soda thinking I was getting enough water from it.
These same health sources also warn that excessive alcohol consumption and hemorrhoids are a painful reality for many heavy drinkers. Piles are inflamed anal veins that grow into small or large masses inside or outside of the anus.
They are commonly known as internal or external hemorrhoids or external piles and internal piles. Hemorrhoid symptoms are chronic itching in and around the rectal cavity. They also cause a stinging burning pain that makes walking or even sitting extremely painful. Severe inflammation of anus veins can cause bleeding from the anal region that can be scary.
Let's look at drinking water, excessive alcohol consumption and hemorrhoids a little more closely.
Drinking Water and Hemorrhoids
Water is absolutely essential in digestion, absorption of nutrients and bodily waste elimination through urination and bowel movements. Health experts recommend as a general rule of thumb to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day. If you're exercising or losing bodily fluids more rapidly you'll need to drink more, but the "8 x 8" rule is a good to gauge follow.
Drinking water helps prevent chronic constipation, which can play a big role in developing piles. Straining when passing bowel movements can lead to blood swollen veins around the anal region. When a person's body is not properly hydrated from drinking enough water constipation can happen that causes painful piles to develop internally or externally.
Dehydration is significant contributor to hemorrhoids. Drinking plenty of water can greatly reduce the risk of getting this condition that effects millions of people yearly. It can be caused by digestive problems due to poor body hydration. You would be amazed at how many cases could be prevented using the "8x8" rule.
Chronic diarrhea is another major cause of piles forming. Diarrhea's spastic motion adds a tremendous amount of unhealthy pressure to the anus that can cause straining like with constipation. Strong spastic pressure on the anus that can also cause anal fissures besides inflamed anal veins.
When people do develop hemorrhoids their doctors always tell them to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins while keeping their digestive system healthy to prevent a future outbreak.
If you don't like the taste of tap water or want to live eco-friendly avoiding bottled water invest in an affordable water purifier for the kitchen faucet.
As a former hemorrhoid sufferer who went through laser surgery in Los Angeles I make sure I drink plenty of water daily. Hydrate to beat them!
Excessive Alcohol Consumption and Hemorrhoids
By no means am I telling people not to drink. I enjoy one glass of red wine with dinner most nights. My doctor told me it was good for my heart in moderation. If I'm at a dinner party it's not uncommon for me to have two or three glasses of red wine while enjoying good company.
When I go fishing or camping with family and friends I enjoy more than a few bottles of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. As I've got older in life I've learned my drinking limits and no when to not push it to excessive alcohol consumption.
Where excessive alcohol consumption and hemorrhoids becomes a dangerous mix is when it comes to heavy or binge drinking. College was my first experience with excessive alcohol consumption and piles. I wasn't drinking enough water or eating right. My sophomore year I developed a very small external hemorrhoid.
It still hurt like an itchy fiery bee sting and I was embarrassed to tell my friends. My parents took me to a doctor who prescribed me a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to treat it and eliminate it. The growth was very small and was caught early, so it could be treated without surgery or banding. There are other many excellent hemorrhoidal products you can buy online for hemorrhoid relief and treatment.
Alcohol dehydrates the body badly and robs it of precious vitamins. Most people when they drink alcohol skip drinking water in between alcoholic beverages and don't take a vitamin for a day or night of drinking.
Heavy drinkers have a higher risk of getting this rectal condition because of alcohol dehydration and lack of vitamins in their bodies. It's recommended to take a multivitamin 4 hours before drinking alcohol. When you drink alcohol make sure to take your vitamins.
Drinking too much alcohol can cause severe constipation and small, dry stools that are tough to pass during bowel movements. The strain and pressure to pass a bowel movement makes the veins in and around the anus inflamed. This is a major factor to internal and external piles developing.
People that consume alcohol excessively will commonly experience digestive and bowel movement problems. This is because alcohol in any common form (beer, wine, whiskey etc.) acts as a diuretic that will dehydrate the alcohol drinker.
A person who is dehydrated normally experiences constipation and is forced to severely strain when passing bowel movements. Binge drinking can also lead to highly elevated blood pressure, which in turn increases the pressure to delicate veins in and around the anus.
The important thing is to drink water even when you're drinking alcohol to stay well hydrated. Dehydration, constipation and diarrhea contribute heavily to hemorrhoid risk or can make a current hemorrhoid condition worse. Water is your friend when it comes to hemorrhoids. Excessive alcohol consumption and hemorrhoids are two things to avoid if you can.

Weird Symptoms of Fibromyalgia to Watch Out For!

Although you may not be aware of it, most everyone knows someone who suffers with fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia generally don't go around shouting about their condition from the rooftops. It's not fashionable or fun, and it hurts like the devil! And there are approximately 5 million of them in America today... about 90% of them are women!
Unfortunately, if you don't have the symptoms of fibromyalgia... and you are very fortunate if you don't... it's really hard to relate to someone who has all the weird and seemingly disconnected conditions that come with the illness. And some of the weirdest symptoms can have the most devastating effect on a fibromyalgia sufferer's life... mostly because they go unrecognized as symptoms and are often not addressed or treated.
Fibromyalgia patients, who are under the care of a rheumatologist, are provided with medications to manage their symptoms. That's one way the common symptoms of fibromyalgia, like the pain, can be kept under control. However, it's not unusual for individuals with the illness to keep quiet about their condition or even lie to their family, friends, co-workers, and bosses ... to avoid appearing as "weak" or "a chronic complainer". As a fibromyalgia "victim" myself, I can tell you that I kept my mouth shut, especially at work, so that I wouldn't lose opportunities on my job. I just worked through the pain and misery.
People who understand the syndrome are aware of the fatigue and severe pain that are the most common symptoms of fibromyalgia. These are usually theindicators used by doctors when diagnosing the illness. But, what is not commonly known, is that many fibromyalgia sufferers:
1) Have difficulty focusing, unexplained vision changes, and visual blind spots
2) Frequently have gastrointestinal issues including abdominal cramping, bloating, reflux, intestinal gas, frequent constipation and/or diarrhea, and even nausea and vomiting
3) Are hypersensitive to odors, bright lights, and loud noises; have alcohol intolerance; and sensitivities to various medications and foods
4) Have vivid or disturbing dreams and nightmares, sleep difficulties including inability to stay asleep; or even hypersomnia --- which is excessive sleeping
5) Appear to be clumsy --- walking and accidentally bumping into things, knocking things over; have trouble judging distances --- like when reaching for things or driving a car; have occasional balance difficulties, and may experience vertigo/dizziness
6) Have difficulty finding the right words to express themselves and remembering names or recognizing faces; have difficulty following directions, and frequently lose their train of thought; are easily distracted and may have long and/or short-term memory loss
Can you imagine waking up one morning and not being able to remember your boss' last name... or your best friend's phone number?... Or has this already happened to you?
These are examples of only a few of the weird and seemingly unrelated symptoms of fibromyalgia, and sufferers and their doctors will tell you... every case is different. Some individuals have severe gastrointestinal problems and trouble sleeping as their primary complaints along with the common symptoms of pain and fatigue, while others can't tolerate strong smells and may have vision problems and difficulty focusing. In all cases, fibromyalgia sufferers have multiple symptoms, some of which may never have been recognized as part of their fibromyalgia condition.
So... Is There Any Treatment That Can Help Me With All My Weird Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?
The simple answer is "yes!" Improving your overall health is the key! Many of the symptoms accompanying fibromyalgia's pain and fatigue, like overall weakness, headaches and migraines, gastrointestinal distress, sleep issues, and even depression, can be reduced or eliminated by improving your diet! Begin with a heart-smart diet with low sugar, low fat... and add fruits, vegetables and whole grain. Avoid drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages. Maintain a healthy weight and avoid allergy-causing foods. And... include an adequate supply of lean, digestible protein to repair the body at the cellular level. It's widely accepted that a good diet complete with vitamins, minerals and amino acids --- protein's building blocks which support the muscles, nerves and brain, may help you to take control the symptoms of fibromyalgia... and your life.

Pneumonia Home Remedies

Pneumonia home remedies can be used along with conventional medicine to relieve the pain and discomfort of painful lungs, breathlessness, coughing, fatigue and fever. The best pneumonia home remedies focus on providing good nutrition, rest and specific immune-boosting supplements.
Vitamin C is one of the better known pneumonia home remedies. Vitamin C boosts your immune function by stimulating the production of interferon - a natural microbe killer. When an infection starts, take 500-1000mg of vitamin C every hour for several hours (or until you get loose stools).
Zinc stimulates antibody and T-cell production and helps fuel circulation of white blood cells. A zinc lozenge or dose of liquid zinc every 2-3 hours is recommended.
Vitamin A will help heal inflamed mucous membranes and strengthen the immune system. This dose can be taken safely a couple of times a day. If you are pregnant keep your dose below 2500 IU.
Taken fresh, either raw or lightly cooked, garlic is one of the most accessible pneumonia home remedies. For those who dislike the taste of garlic, 2-3 capsules or tablets a day will do the trick.
Flu buster tea
This tea is one of the most potent antiviral and antibacterial pneumonia home remedies. Drink throughout the day to relieve symptoms:
1 heaped teaspoon Fenugreek
1 cm ginger root, grated
1 clove garlic, crushed
pinch cayenne pepper
1/2 lemon, squeezed
Seep solid ingredients in hot water for 5 minutes. Add lemon juice before serving. If desired a teaspoon of natural honey (Manuka Honey is best) can be added.
Other herbs
Liquorice, Marshmallow, Horehound, Coltfoot are natural cough relievers. Drinking warm or hot water and sucking on lozenges can help.
Infection fighting foods
There are many foods with antiviral and antibacterial properties which act as fantastic pneumonia home remedies. Most of these foods have high antioxidant levels. Some of the hotter foods have expectorant and decongestant properties.
Here's some foods to include in your diet: Onion, garlic, green or red peppers, chilli, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard (especially horseradish), Shitake mushrooms, turmeric, ginger, ginseng, pineapple, lemons, blueberry, raspberry, plum, tea (black, oolong or green), natural yoghurt and chicken broth (high in cysteine which thins mucous). Good quality protein foods are also important to help rebuild the cells.
Other pneumonia home remedies
  • Stay warm, rest, get plenty of sleep and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to rehydrate the body.
  • Gargling with a teaspoon of salt in warm water can help relieve a sore throat.
  • A steamy shower or Epsom salt bath can help relieve nasal congestion and help you feel better.
  • A steam inhalation where you breathe in the steam over a bowl of hot water (cover your head with a towel) can soothe inflamed membranes and drain mucous. The addition of a few drops of eucalyptus, tea tree or pine can help.
  • A vaporiser or humidifier at night can moisten the mucous membranes and help you sleep.
  • A chest rub with a menthol or camphor rub can open breathing passages.
  • Don't go back to work too early. Give your body a chance to heal.
These simple pneumonia home remedies can help a great deal in alleviating your symptoms.

Turmeric Benefits - Cancer Prevention - Can Turmeric Prevent Cancer?

The active component curcumin in the spice turmeric is shown to prevent and retard cancer in hundreds of studies and research reports. Many of the methods by which carcinogenesis (attack of carcinogens on the DNA and cellular structure) progresses has been shown to be retarded or short circuited by turmeric. A powerful carcinogenic agent TPA (tissue polypeptide antigen) is known to cause cancer by increasing the production of a substance in the body called protein kinase. Turmeric appears to suppress the production of protein kinase. Turmeric is also shown to lower the levels of oncogen which is a cancer causing gene called c-jun. A team of scientists not only demonstrated these suppressive effects but caused a 99% inhibition of TPA induced tumors on rodents.
It is obvious that turmeric is shutting of some of the cancer causing pathways and probably blocking of malignant tumors at the initiation, promotion and progression stage itself. Turmeric is capable of slowing or preventing genetic mutation in cells that are risk factors for cancer. Mutation is a genetic change in the DNA - Deoxyribonucleic acid of a cell that gets passed on to future generations of the cells in the process of cell division. Although not all DNA mutations are carcinogenic cancer has always followed DNA mutation.
Couple of important studies has dramatically indicated that this cancer causing DNA mutation pathway can be closed by turmeric. In one study mutagenic changes in the bone marrow of mice were significantly decreased by administration of turmeric extract. Another study was dramatic because it was done on people. Normally such studies are never done on people as it is illegal and unethical to inject people with carcinogenic agents as in the case of animals used for laboratory studies. Smokers are injecting themselves with wide range of carcinogenic agents. A study was done on 100 smokers in India who refused to quit against all warnings. They were given turmeric extract pill for 30 days (Though diet in India regularly contains turmeric that is not sufficient). During this period there was a startling 40% reduction in the urinary extraction of tobacco related mutagens - a byproduct of cell/DNA mutation. Clearly turmeric -curcumin detoxified enough carcinogens in the lungs to cause such a reduction of mutation process.
Turmeric tops the short list of really powerful cancer preventive agents. Many government funded agencies like Nation Cancer Institute, Medline Plus and American Cancer Institute have recognized turmeric as one of the best means of prevention against cancer.

Diagnosing Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity

Celiac disease, also known as gluten sensitive enteropathy is very common but frequently missed. It is an autoimmune disease of intestinal damage due to gluten in people who are genetically predisposed. Classic Celiac disease is diagnosed by abnormal blood tests and an abnormal
appearing intestine on biopsy and symptoms that resolve with a gluten free diet.
Several blood tests exist for Celiac disease. They have varying degrees of accuracy. Some are more sensitive, meaning they will be positive in milder forms of the disease but are not specific, meaning a positive test may not indicate Celiac disease. Others are felt to be very specific, meaning that when they are positive, it is almost certain you have the disease.
The most specific tests are tests for Celiac disease endomysial antibodies (EMA) and
tissue transglutaminase antibody (tTG) tests. These two tests are IgA based tests and can be negative if you are deficient in the immunoglobin IgA, which occurs in 10-20% of people with Celiac. When either EMA or tTG are positive Celiac disease is very likely and usually the intestine biopsy is positive. Recent studies indicate that the tTG may only be positive in 40% of true Celiacs when mild degrees of intestine damage are present on biopsy. Seronegative Celiac, meaning the blood tests are negative but the biopsy is positive, may occur in up to 20% of Celiacs.
Antibodies for gliadin (AGA), the toxic fraction of gluten are considered very sensitive but not specific for Celiac disease. Newer assays for AGA antibodies for gluten that has undergone a chemical change
called deamidation appear to be more specific for Celiac disease (Gliadin II,
Inova) than the older gliadin tests. They also may be as or more accurate than EMA and tTG
antibody tests but are not yet widely available.
The most distressing problem for people with lesser forms of gluten intolerance who have blood tests and/or biopsies that are normal or borderline yet respond to a gluten free diet is either not being taken seriously or knowing for sure if they are sensitive to gluten. For these individuals stool
antibody testing for antigliadin and tTG have been helpful. Such stool testing has been performed in research labs and published in a few studies but are only recently available through the commercial lab, Enterolab. Founded by a former Baylor research gastroenterologist, Dr Ken Fine, the tests are available to people online without a doctors order but are not generally covered by insurance. Dr. Fine, who patented the test, has yet to publish the results of his findings in a peer reviewed journal so his tests are not widely accepted. However, his unpublished data and the clinical experience of some of us who have used his test have
indicated the tests are very sensitive for signs of gluten sensitivity. He reports that they are 100% sensitive for Celiac disease and highly sensitive
for gluten sensitivity of lesser degrees. In the presence of symptoms, that reverse on a gluten-free diet,
abnormal stool antibody levels can be found in most people before blood tests or biopsies become
Small intestine biopsies during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
are considered the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of Celiac disease.
However, recent studies have demonstrated that some people with gluten sensitivity, especially relatives of Celiacs
with little or no symptoms, have changes from gluten injury to the intestine that can not be seen with normal microscope examination. They can only be seen with special stains not routinely done or with a research electron microscope. The special stains are known as immunohistochemistry stains. They stain specialized white
blood cells called lymphocytes in the intestinal lining tips or villi. When these lymphocytes are increased it is known as intraepithelial lymphocytosis or increased IELs and it is the earliest sign
of gluten induced injury or irritation. Electron microscopy also reveals very early ultrastructural changes in some individuals when blood tests and standard biopsy examination are normal. When people who have these changes are
offered the option of a gluten-free diet they usually responded favorably. In contrast, those who continue to eat gluten often later developed classic Celiac disease.
What these studies suggest is that a "normal small intestine biopsy" may exclude
Celiac disease as defined by strict criteria but it is not a gold standard for detecting gluten sensitivity. This fact is appreciated by many individuals who have respond to a gluten-free diet they start
based on their symptoms, family history, suggestive blood test or stool antibody
Another source of confusion is in the genetics of Celiac and gluten sensitivity.
Testing for specific blood type patterns on white blood cells known as HLA
DQ2 and DQ8 is increasingly being employed to determine if a person carries either of the two gene
pattern present in 95-98% of Celiacs and predisposing them to the development of Celiac disease. Some use the absence of these two patterns
as a way of excluding the possibility of Celiac disease and the need for testing or
gluten-free diet. However, there are rare reports of documented Celiac disease in people who are DQ2 and
DQ8 negative. Moreover, recent studies indicate other DQ
patterns may be associated with gluten sensitivity though unlikely to
predispose to classic Celiac disease.
Testing for all the DQ patterns is advocated by Dr. Fine, based on his
experience with stool antibody test results. He reports that other DQ types are
associated with elevated levels of gliadin and tTG in the stool and symptoms that respond to a gluten-free diet.
According to his unpublished data, all the DQ types except DQ4 are associated with
a risk of intolerance to gluten. Therefore, testing for all the DQ types allows a person to
determine if they carry one of the two high risk gene types for Celiac disease or
any of the other "minor DQ" genes Fine has found associated with gluten sensitivity.
Enterolab's stool testing for gliadin antibodies and tissue
transglutaminase antibodies, though not widely accepted, have gained favor in the lay
public's opinion as an option for determining sensitivity to gluten either despite negative blood tests and/or biopsies or in place of the more invasive tests. Most doctors still recommend the accepted blood tests and small
bowel biopsy for confirmation of Celiac. Though the reports in the lay community
are overwhelmingly positive they have not been subjected to peer review in
the medical community pending Dr. Fine publishing his data or other researchers reproducing his results.
However, doctors open to
the broader problem of gluten
sensitivity are reporting these tests helpful in many patients suspected of gluten
intolerance. Especially when someone has symptoms consistent with gluten sensitivity but has negative or inconclusive blood tests and/or biopsies these tests may be very helpful though some are not certain
how to interpret the tests. The national Celiac organizations are uncertain about how to
comment on their application without published research though a recent article
in the British Medical Journal did show stool tests highly specific for Celiac. Dr.
Fine has publicly commented that his unpublished data demonstrates those with
abnormal stool tests indicating gluten sensitivity
overwhelmingly respond favorably to a gluten free diet with improvement of
symptoms and general quality of life.
Another problem is that there are not universally agreed upon definitions for gluten sensitivity or intolerance.
