9 Common Causes for Thyroid Problems

How you sleep, how easy it is to wake up, and how much energy and stamina you have during the day is directly related to the levels of the thyroid hormones. The thyroid is heavily involved in so many more processes in the body as well!
Hypothyroidism is a common health condition in the U.S. and means that the thyroid gland is not active enough. It may cause symptoms such as weight gain, tiredness, pale and cold skin, constipation, high cholesterol levels, weakness, and joint pain. The opposite condition is called Hyperthyroidism in which the thyroid gland is too active. This may result in symptoms such as weight loss, tremors, heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, and so forth. But naturally, the thyroid is a sneaky organ and your symptoms typically won't be "textbook" as described or all occur at the same time. It could be something as subtle as noticing you just can't make it through a day without coffee anymore.
The blood work performed by doctors is typically a "basic" or "expanded" thyroid panel, and can include variety of measurements. Normal values are constantly changing. As a physician, I am only interested in the optimal, ideal specific range of these values, whereas many outdated laboratory values have a great range and a different motivation and view point for what's normal.
Here's briefly how the thyroid gland works and don't worry, I won't bore you with science! The thyroid is like middle management in the corporate world. His office is located in the throat, wrapped around our windpipe as two lobes. His big time boss is the brain, who works up at corporate headquarters. That's how body works - the brain is the master control of every organ, tissue, muscle, and cell in the body. The thyroid's upper management is the pituitary gland, whom he also takes orders from. Thyroid manages many functions of the corporation especially the customer service teams, but instead of sending out memos all day from his desk, he sends out hormones. Hormones are the messages that act out what the brain commands. So he send out hormones (messages) to his customer service team to go out into the body and check in with every single cell (customers). They stop at every cell to see if its doing okay - does it need more nutrients? More oxygen? Anything? More important than that, the hormones get to call on some large important customers. For example hormones help the heart utilize cholesterol. His best customer service representatives are T3 and T4 and are his right hand team. For that reason, T3 is the most active thyroid number measured. This is certainly not the complete picture, just an overview of what the thyroid does.
Did you know that there's a real definition of "being healthy?" It's the definition adopted by all major medical textbooks, including Gray's Anatomy (the textbook that's the corner stone of the entire medical profession, not the television show). Being healthy is the ability to function at one hundred percent mentally, physically, and socially. This definition tells me that health is more than just the physical body, it's all encompassing. And health is about function. Nowhere in that definition did it discuss how someone feels. It's about how well the body works beneath the surface and adapts for you.
Here are 9 causes of thyroid levels that are off on your blood work, and what further steps might you want to explore:
1) Environmental Factors. The body is shutting down because it's exhausted. The two most common examples of environmental factors affecting the thyroid gland are high stress levels and a lack of sleep. Sleep is literally the body's time to heal itself and depriving ourselves of that has a much greater effect than we realize. High stress levels will cause excess cortisol in the body, which is a hormone linked to increased risks of heart disease (and other conditions) and keeps your body in the "flight or fight" response mode. These are the two first things that I recommend all of my patients to address. Here are some tips for sleeping well and lowering stress:
a. Deep breathing exercises
b. Use of essential oils like lavender
c. Eliminate tvs, cell phones, etc. in the bedroom
d. Yoga, meditation, or stretching to promote a calm, clear mind
2) Gastrointestinal Function. Not only does our digestive system break down food to use as nutrients, it also contains almost 80% of our immune system! Food Intolerances are a common cause of digestive problems and there is a strong link in the research to Gluten Intolerance and Celiac Disease with thyroid imbalances. Many people with suspected gluten intolerance also have many other hidden undetected food intolerances that mimick similar symptoms.
3) Toxicity. A common sign of toxicity in the body can be bags underneath the eyes. Liver is our main organ responsible for detoxing the body and preventing any garbage from hanging around to destroy our tissues. If a need for detoxing exists, it can involve dietary changes, adding more vegetables to the diet in the form of Juicing in order to make the internal body conditions inhospitable for toxins, infrared saunas, and acupuncture to balance energy meridians corresponding to these organs. One of my tips is to drink a mug of warm water with half a fresh squeezed lemon every morning 15 minutes before breakfast. It gets the liver active and ready to work!
4) Hormonal Imbalances such as pregnancy, contraceptive use, estrogen / hormone replacement therapy, or bowel dysfunctions. Too much estrogen will increase the activity in the thyroid gland. Estrogen is also used as a medication for which the effects are over played and risks minimized. Research and results on Hormone Replacement Therapy now show that it does not protect anyone from incontinence, Alzheimer's, heart disease, and so forth but it actually increases your risk for cancer. Other natural ways to resolve a hormonal imbalance, especially around menopausal age are acupuncture or a physician grade nutritional supplement prescription.
5) Consumption of soy products and non-organic dairy. Soy and non-organic dairy both will increase estrogen in the body and therefore affect the thyroid gland. I would recommend anyone (regardless of your health condition) to eliminate both of these items from your diet. Remember, both of these are very sneaky and hidden in many processed foods.
6) Constipation. Too many toxins being recycled in our bowels from lack of elimination will put extra estrogen into system. My favorite, most effect and natural solutions for constipation are acupuncture, dietary changes like eliminating sugar and grains, probiotics supplementation, food intolerance testing, other lab measurements that could enlighten the reason for constipation.
7) Nutritional Deficiencies such as B12 or Iron deficiency. Some of the signs of nutrient deficiencies are similar to symptoms of hypothyroidism. Reasons that one could have nutrient deficiencies could include lack of nutritional dietary habits or heavy metal toxicity (which is actually much more common than it sounds). Hair analysis is the best long term blueprint of the body to assess for heavy metal toxicity or nutrient deficiencies.
8) Immune System Dysfunctions such as adrenal problems which increase cortisol in the body, increase your risk for heart disease (among other conditions) and keep your body in constant "flight or fight" panic mode. Adrenal problems are typically measured with easy, at home saliva testing.
9) Chronic Candidiasis which may cause symptoms such as white patches in mouth, memory problems, issues with sugar handling, gas and bloating, mucous in the stool, and cold hands or feet. Ask your doctor about an easy blood test to see if you have an acute or long term candida problem. Solutions for candidiasis may involve dietary changes, detoxification, and using natural herbs or supplements to resolve candida imbalance

Simple Hair Mask Protein Treatments to Grow Long Hair Fast

A protein hair mask treatment is great because it conditions your scalp and hair and allows proper and complete growth. These protein hair masks will help to repair any damage to your mane. It also prevents breakages and minimizes split and brittle hair.
The conventional way to make a protein mask is to use eggs and olive oil. However you do better by adding honey and using virgin coconut oil. To make a treatment the conventional way, you take 2 eggs and you bet them until fully blended together. You then add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to it. Then you mix this until it is nicely blended. When you are done simply apply this mixture to your hair and leave it on for an hour and then wash it out after that.
You can make it better by substituting coconut oil with the olive oil and you can also add two tablespoon of natural honey to the hair mask mixture and use it to grow long hair fast.
The next step after you have applied the hair mask is to use an apple cider rinse to wash your mane out. This is made by taking two tablespoons of apple vinegar and mixing it with a liter of water. Mix the two well and use as a rinse. Now wash your hair with a normal shampoo when you are done using the protein mask treatment. Use the cider rinse to rinse out the remnants of the shampoo away.
The best frequency for a protein hair mask treatment is once a month. I believe you can get more out of it with more frequent treatments. The best way to help make your mane grow even faster and healthier is to also use a good herbal hair oil. A herbal hair oil will go a long way to accelerate healthy hair growth. Follow the hair masks recipes I just shared with you and you will have beautiful hair in no time at all.

How to Remove Freckles – Know the Facts

Bleaching agents, the most conventional treatment for freckles, have limited success in masking the appearance of freckles. Bleaching agents attempt to fade the freckles to a color approximating that of the surrounding skin. However, they can sometimes lighten or darken the skin surrounding the freckles, calling even more attention to the spots. Occasionally, bleaching agents cause rashes or chemical burns. Some people have had success using alpha hydroxy acids on a regular basis, combined with sun avoidance and the use of sun block. Some dermatologists recommend prescription-strength retinoids for the treatment of freckles.
Lemon juice is a time proven freckle fighting remedy. It is not necessary to rub your skin with a piece of lemon. Applying the juice with your fingers will do the job. Fruit and vegetable masks (apricots, strawberries, cucumbers, red currant).
Before treatment, a cold gel is usually applied to the areas to be treated and patients wear protective eyewear. During treatment, a physician or trained staff member gently applies the smooth glass surface of the IPL handpiece to the skin. Light is delivered to the skin surface in precise pulses that are typically pain-free. Occasionally, some signs of treatment, such as redness, can last for one or two hours. In most cases, the entire face is treated, but the therapy can also work well on the neck, chest and hands. Results from a full series of treatments usually last for a year or more.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL): IPL is one of the newer forms of facial rejuvenation. IPL delivers energy to both the superficial (epidermis) and deep (dermis) layers of the skin, the epidermis is spared from damage. Thus, there is virtually no recovery time.
Freckles can also be treated with proper Vitamin supplements. For Egr and individual suffering from freckles should increase the intake of Vitamin C. Due to Vitamin C present in adequate amount in the body, the skin becomes less sensitive to the sun and hence less melanin deposition occurs. The food rich in Vitamin C includes Oranges, grapes, apples, etc.

Chemical peels are used to remove age spots, freckles, discoloration, wrinkles and fine lines. They generally help to make the skin smooth and firm and also help in curing freckles gradually.
Some people's freckles fade away almost completely in the winter and return in the summer. Freckles rarely develop into skin cancer. However, freckles are especially common in people with light skin, and having light skin that burns easily increases your risk of skin cancer. The best treatment for freckles is prevention. The key to preventing freckles is sun avoidance and daily sunscreen use. Cryosurgery -- A light freeze with liquid nitrogen can be used to treat freckles. Tretinoin Sometimes used in conjunction with other bleaching creams, tretinoin (vitamin A acid, Retin-A) also helps to make freckles lighter when applied over a period of time. Several lasers, especially ones that produce a green light, can lighten and eliminate freckles safely and effectively.

Common Symptoms Of Bladder Endometriosis

About 33% of the 5.5 million women suffering from endometriosis in North America have bladder endometriosis. Usually only women who are in their reproductive years are prone to developing this chronic condition. In order for you to understand what bladder endometriosis is its best to know more about endometriosis itself.
Endometriosis is a gynecological condition in which the cells lining the uterus, called endometrium, grow in areas where they are not supposed to grow. The usual locations of endometriosis are the vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other areas in the pelvic region.
However, these misplaced cells are also sometimes found outside the pelvic area, in areas like the bladder and rarely the lungs. When endometrium cells grow inside the bladder, the condition is called bladder endometriosis.

Symptoms of Endometriosis of the Bladder
Not all cases of endometriosis are reported because sometimes women do not associate any symptoms they have with the condition or they may be unaware they have endometriosis.
However, most women with bladder endometriosis complain of pain, which can either be mild or acute, in the pelvic area, especially during their monthly period. Most women only find out that they have this disease five to seven years after its onset because many believe the pains they are feeling are from premenstrual syndrome. A lot of women only begin to consider the seriousness of the situation when they experience other symptoms of the disease.
Other indications that you have bladder endometriosis are difficulty in urination and sometimes you may even have pus or blood in your urine, especially during menstruation. You may also experience painful intercourse, frequent urination, and soreness in the kidneys or bladder area, extreme fatigue and even fever. Bladder endometriosis is a serious illness because it can lead to complications such as damage to the kidneys and bladder.
Bladder endometriosis versus urinary tract infection and interstitial cystitis .
This illness is quite difficult to detect. If the symptoms are just painful urination, cause can be misdiagnosed as a urinary tract infection. However, you will realize that you don't have a urinary tract infection if antibiotics don't seem to work and symptoms continue to manifest. Moreover, laboratory results will show nonexistence of bacteria in your urine.
Another disease that has very similar symptoms to bladder endometriosis is interstitial cystitis. In fact, over 70 % of women suffering from bladder endometriosis are misdiagnosed and told they have interstitial cystitis.
Women suffering from interstitial cystitis have inflammation in the area between the lining of the bladder and the bladder muscle. That is why the sufferers of this disease also complain of pain in the pelvic region, blood or pus in the urine, difficulty in urination, pain during intercourse and frequent urination.
In order to determine if you're suffering from either bladder endometriosis or interstitial cystitis, you need to undergo cystoscopy, a procedure in which a doctor will insert a device called a cystoscope into your urethra. This will enable the doctor to view the bladder and get cell samples for biopsy.
One glaring difference between bladder endometriosis and interstitial cystitis is that only women suffer from bladder endometriosis, whereas men can also have interstitial cystitis, generally around 10% of IC suffers are men.

Lipozene: Can you Really Lose Weight Fast With Lipozene?

One of the more recent "stars" of the diet supplement world, Lipozene has been touted as a fast, easy route, to substantial weight loss. But does it really work?
The Lipozene diet pill is manufactured by Obesity Research Institute. You may have heard of them - they previously marketed similar products under the names Fiberslim and Propolene.
The central ingredient in Lipozene, is a substance called glucomannan. And this is the same substance that was used in Obesity Research Institute's prior diet products. So first, you need to take a good look at what exactly is glucomannan.
Without getting too technical, (I don't want to put you to sleep with a bunch of terminology from my Chemistry lab manuals!), glucomannan is basically a fiber supplement, derived from a plant. It is a substance that your body cannot absorb, so it just passes through your system, while providing fiber to help move everything else through. (Trying hard, not to get disgusting here!)
Now, there are clinical studies which confirm that glucomannan lowers blood-fat levels, and levels of the "bad" cholesterol (LDL). There is also some confirmation that consuming glucomannan with water before a meal, will give you a full feeling (the idea being that you will then eat less).

But before you run to your computer, to order a year's supply of Lipozene, I'm going to give you the honest truth. There are very serious problems with this product!
Yes I realize, you may have heard lots of stories about successful weight loss using Lipozene - from people trying to sell it to you! Well, fortunately for you, I refuse to sell people something that I wouldn't use myself. So I am going to reveal to you, the whole true story, about Lipozene and weight loss.
First, you need to clearly understand the problems:
#1: Diet pills are still drugs. And ALL drugs cause associated side effects. And sometimes, these side effects can even be dangerous.
#2: Glucomannan is a fiber product. And all fiber products can cause certain vitamins and minerals to bind with them - thus preventing your body from using those essential vitamins and minerals. Thus, it is advisable to take a quality multi-vitamin supplement, if you decide to use this type of diet pill.
#3: Since Lipozene is essentially a fiber product, this brings up the question: Why not just buy one of the commonly available fiber supplements, at a cost that is far less than Lipozene?
#4: There are many claims of success floating around the Internet, purportedly from Lipozene users. However, even these people state that they were following nutritional diet plans, and engaging in regular exercise, while on Lipozene. This means that we have no way of knowing whether they would have succeeded equally, merely by using a diet plan and exercise alone.

None of the problems above, however, addresses the most serious concern with Lipozene: Consumer Fraud.
The company that makes the product (Obesity Research Institute), has been cited numerous times for billing customers under false pretenses, and for refusing to provide refunds under conditions where a refund was promised. Furthermore, the Federal Trade Commission has charged the company with making "false and unsubstantiated claims" in the past. As a result, the company has been forced to pay $1.5 million in "customer redress"!
So as we can see, rather than living up to its promises of "easy weight loss", Lipozene comes with a list of concerns, and even questionable results. Plus, it is sold by a company with a history of criminal actions! Fortunately for you, there are other alternatives to Lipozene, which WILL help you to lose weight quickly. But you need to have a Complete Diet Plan - one that uses SAFE supplements to accelerate your weight loss! And I will layout all the details for you, (plus show you for Free, the step-by-step way to put together your own Weight Loss Plan), in my next article in this series.

Essential Facts About Anti Ischemic Drug

The anti-ischemic drug, Trimetazidine preserves the energy metabolism of cells that have been exposed to ischemia or hypoxia. Patients with angina treated with this drug showed increase coronary flow reserve.
Doctors prescribed Trimetazidine to treat angina pectoris. This anti-ischemic or anti-anginal metabolic drug helps improve myocardial glucose utilization by means of inhibiting fatty acid metabolism.
Mechanism of Action:
Referred by its brand name, Vastarel MR, Trimetazidine is available in tablet form in dosage of 35 milligrams. The energy metabolism of cells that are exposed to ischemia or hypoxia can be preserved with the help of this medication, which prevents reduction in levels of intracellular adenosine triphosphate. The use ofthis drug ensures improved transmembranous sodium-potassium flow and proper functioning of ionic pumps as well as maintaining cellular homeostasis. It is also known to inhibit oxidation of fatty acid in your blood vessels.
Important Information
Trimetazidine should be taken with full stomach. It is not recommended to be used by pregnant women, lactating women or people with hypersensitivity. Adverse drug reactions to this drug include vomiting, nausea and gastrointestinal disturbances. In some countries, Trimetazidine is marketed as treatment for dizziness and tinnitus. This is due to the fact that it has a high tolerability and safety profile, with no known drug interactions.
Other Therapeutic Benefits
Trimetazidine is also known for its cardioprotective effects as confirmed in human ischaemia-reperfusion. The drug works on patients who are undergoing bypass surgery with cardioplegic arrest and percutaneous coronary artery revascularization. Studies showed that a modified-release (MR) form of this medication, if taken twice daily, is bioequivalent to previous formulation which is taken thrice daily.
Meanwhile, controlled studies done on angina patients showed that Trimetazidine raises coronary flow reserve, thus controlling rapid swings in blood pressure, significantly decreasing the frequency of angina attacks leading to reduction in the use of nitrates.
For diabetic patients with coronary heart disease, Trimetazidine helps improve left ventricular function. Trimetazidine also showed effectiveness in treating patients with heart failure. Consulting your doctor before taking this drug is highly recommended.

Angular Cheilitis Treatment - How to Find Effective Treatment For Angular Chelitis

You may have a condition that is known as angular chelitis if you are suffering from cracks in the corner of your mouth which continue to split and can be quite painful.
This is a common condition that many suffer from and occurs at a higher rate during cold weather and the winter months and can also occur with over exposure to the sun.
Dry, cracked and painful lips may also accompany the noticeable splits and cracks in the corner of the mouth, in general.
The condition in itself is not a serious one but it can cause discomfort, pain and embarrassment due to the facial location. Many sufferers find it difficult to eat, laugh or even speak and therefore it is important to locate an effective angular chelitis treatment as soon as possible.
The angular chelitis treatment you choose will work more efficiently when the underlying cause is identified and also treated. The benefit of being able to identify the cause means you may be able to prevent this skin condition from occurring again.
It has been discovered that the main cause of infection relates to Candida, another cause is bacteria growth or Staph. The development of Candida and Staph can occur for a number of reasons as well.
Elderly people who need to rely on dentures often suffer from angular chelitis because the dentures are not fitted properly in the first place and they lack the daily sterilization needed to keep the mouth area free from bacteria and fungi. Wearing dentures and not being able to close the mouth properly leads to increasing saliva deposits in the very corners of the lips and mouth. This provides the most ideal environment for fungi and bacteria to grow and prosper and the infection will develop from this point.
Licking of the lips is another bad habit that can cause excess saliva in the area and increases the chance of infection. It is hard not to lick your lips when they are dry and cracked, however in terms of finding an angular chelitis treatment, it is important to break this habit and any others that involve biting nails or sticking objects in the mouth. All of these habits will encourage bacteria to spread and develop into infection.
Some women may develop allergic reactions to skin care products or lipsticks, others may be deficient in ranges of vitamins such as B12 and iron. These reactions and deficiencies are also related to the development of angular chelitis.
What options are available for angular chelitis treatment?
Chapped lips - a suitable lip balm may be able to moisturize the area without the need for licking, which will only make the condition worse. Limit sun exposure and hydrate the entire body with an increase in fluids.
Angular ChelitisDentures - take a visit to the dentist and adjust the dentures to fit properly and make sure they are sterilized on a daily basis. One recommended angular chelitis treatment involves soaking the dentures in an antiseptic solution whilst you are sleeping. Try to keep the mouth area as dry as possible to avoid the infection spreading and to begin the healing process.
Vitamins - this may be an effective angular chelitis treatment if you feel you are experiencing deficiencies and it is always a good idea to increase vitamin intake even if you don't suffer from angular chelitis. You may also look at you daily diet to see if any improvements can be made in this area as well. Good food choices may include diary products and green vegetables.
Creams - there are anti fungal and bacterial creams available however choosing an angular chelitis treatment such as this, could be harmful due to the close proximity to the mouth and the high possibility of ingestion.

Can Rooster Comb Injections Prevent Knee Replacement?

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common problems seen by both rheumatologists as well as orthopedists in the office. The standard forms of therapy include maintenance of proper weight, exercise, application of cold, bracing, analgesics (pain killers), anti-inflammatory medicines, steroid injections, and viscosupplementation. This latter type of treatment involves the injection of a lubricant directly into the knee.
These lubricants consist of a purified form of a protein called hyaluronic acid (HA). These preparations are effective in relieving pain. pain relief from OA of the knee starts between the 5th and 13th week follwoing injection. While HA is felt to be effective for pain relief, it has been unclear as to whether there are any other benefits.
Two recent studies have demonstrated that viscosupplementation may actually forestall the need for eventual knee replacement surgery and also may represent a long term cost savings.

The first study from Louisiana State University surveyed patients from a large orthopedic practice. A total of 863 patients (1187 knees) were evaluated. All patients had grade 4 changes, meaning they had "bone on bone" and were candidates for total knee replacement.
Using survival analysis of the data, it was estimated that total knee replacement was delayed approximately 3.8 years in 75 percent of the knees receiving viscosupplementation (Waddell DD, et al. J. Managed Care Pharm. 2007; 2:113-121.)
In another study, investigators in Thailand studied one hundred and eighty three patients with knee OA (208 knees) who failed conservative treatments and did not have contraindications for surgery were enrolled. All patients were treated with one course of three hyaluoronic acid injections at weekly intervals and followed up for a minimum 2-year period. In case of successful treatment (response group), repeated doses were recommended. If the patients did not improve within one month after completion of the injections, they would be classified as a non-response group and total knee replacement surgery was considered. Cost of direct medical costs (drugs), hospitalization, and resource utilization were recorded and analyzed.

They concluded that IA-HA (joint injection with HA) should be considered as a medical intervention before surgical procedures in knee OA patients who failed conservative treatments. Even though the cost of IA-HA treatment would increase the total costs of treatment and some patients might fail, it was only 6.44% of the total costs. On the other hand, if patients responded to IA-HA treatment, then the surgical procedures were not required. This treatment would represent a savings of 63.26% of total costs. (Turajane T, et al. J Med Assoc Thailand. 2007; 90;1839).
While, the exact analyses and conclusions of these two studies are different, they do suggest that HA may be cost effectve in delaying the need for total knee replacement.
There are five HA preparations available. They are Hyalgan, Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc, and Euflexxa. Only Euflexxa is not derived from a chicken source.

The number of injections required varies from 3-5 depending on the preparation used. Hyalgan and Supartz generally are given as weekly injections for 5 weeks while Synvisc, Orthovisc, and Euflexxa are given as weekly injections for 3 weeks.
Thes injections should be administered using either fluoroscopic or ultrasound needle guidance to ensure accuracy.
Side-effects are minimal when administered by trained specialists.
HA injections are worth a try even with grade 4 knees if patients wish to delay surgery.

Effect of Smoking on the Lungs

Smoking has a wide variety of health effects and can affect just about every organ in the body. But one of the organs that is most directly affected is the lungs. This is maybe not surprising as this is the organ in direct contact with cigarette smoke.
The lungs are organs of respiration. They are designed to carry air that contains oxygen and pass this oxygen to the blood stream. Everybody has two lungs that are divided into lobes.
When somebody starts smoking this causes irritation of the cells lining the air tubes within the lungs (the bronchi and bronchioles). One of the body's basic responses to this is to produce mucus. This mucus can reduce the diameter of the airtubes making it more difficult to breathe. Have you heard of a 'smoker's cough'? This is when a smoker coughs up this mucus.
In a healthy person, there are cells lining the lungs and upper respiratory tract that have small hair-like projections called cilia present. These beat to move dust and debris out of the lungs. They are a bit like the lung's own broom sweeping team. Smoking kills these cells so that their cleaning function is no longer carried out. Dust and particles can then accumulate which is one of the reasons that smokers often complain of respiratory diseases.
One of the gases in cigarette smoke is carbon monoxide. This gas interferes with the process of oxygenation of blood in the lungs. In fact if you inhale too much carbon monoxide you will suffocate and die. This gas is present in car exhaust fumes and is responsible for the deaths of many people each year using this as a form of suicide.
The air sacs in your lungs where oxygen is passed to the blood are called alveoli. These have a very large surface area - about the size of a tennis court. Every time that you smoke you kill some of these alveoli. These structures can't grow back, so once they are destroyed, that's it. Is it any wonder that smokers find it difficult to breathe due to minor exertion, such as walking up stairs?
The long-term effect of smoking on the lungs is quite well documented. Cancer of the lungs is largely due to smoking. It is estimated that 87% of cases of lung cancer in the US are smoking related. Smoking is the primary cause behind a condition called COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Patients with this condition find it very difficult to breathe because their airways have become so obstructed.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Cures!

Peripheral Artery Disease Can Now Be Cured!
No matter what you have heard or what you've been told, Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) can be cured! Many Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) suffers who use a new, simple, safe natural cure report that they began noticing improvement within three to four days!
Here's what you need to know:
Conventional medical treatments cannot cure Peripheral Artery Disease. If you have PAD you already know that the best you can hope for when using conventional medical treatments is to slow the progression of the disease (not cure it).
Stents, Bypass Surgery, Balloon Angioplasty, Arterial Reaming, and Prescription Drugs do not address the underlying cause of the disease. At best they can only provide temporary relief. By not taking the initiative to seek out proven alternative solutions that work, and allowing the progression of Peripheral Artery Disease to continue or remain static, can lead to serious problems such as: Heart Disease, Stroke, Blood Clots, Gangrene, Amputation, and decreased blood flow to the brain.
In order to cure PAD, the following impediments must be addressed:
Hardening of the Arteries
Nothing within the scope of conventional medicine addresses this problem. Allowing the condition to persist invites the formation of plaque buildup and blockages that encourage the development of PAD. Fortunately, nature has a natural solution to the problem.
The mainstream medical community suggests using a combination of a restricted diet and exercise to alleviate the problem. People who have Peripheral Artery Disease, and have implemented this methodology soon discover that they are ultimately still fighting a losing battle.
The Next Step in Conventional Treatment
Usually a doctor will prescribe a Cholesterol lowering drug along with a drug to control blood pressure and possibly even blood thinner to improve circulation. All of these test-tube concoctions are unnatural to the human body. They manipulate and disrupt normal body functions, and many people suffer serious side effects from taking them. Worst of all, they do not cure PAD because they only mask the underlying cause of the disease and simply attempt to treat the symptoms. Only Nature offers a real solution and cure!
Sludge and Plaque in the Arteries
Stents, Bypass Surgery, Balloon Angioplasty, Arterial Reaming
Unfortunately, these procedures can only provide temporary relief. Since they do nothing to stop the continuing formation of sludge and plaque, in a matter of time the procedures may need to be repeated.
Why Your Doctor Has Not Told You About The Natural Cures
It is likely that your doctor does not know or believe that Peripheral Artery Disease can be cured naturally. In addition, because the current conventional medical treatments for PAD are so closely tied to the drug and medical industries multi billion dollar income streams, there is no incentive to tell you that you can quickly cure your PAD problem yourself in the privacy of your own home for only pennies a day!

Low-Cost Cardio Workouts You Can Do At Home

An exercise regimen has to comprise of strength straining, flexibility and fat reduction techniques. Using weights to improve muscle tone is all well and good, but if fat isn't burned, no amount of weight training will give you those toned abs you yearn for. Getting enrolled at a gym is one of the best ways to get a workout designed for your body type but you can also fill interim periods by following an all-round regimen at home.
Exercises don't need expensive equipment though those who can afford them shouldn't scrimp either. Rather than equipment, performing the right exercises is the key to attaining fitness and having a well-sculpted body. Below is a list of cardio workouts that cost only a few dollars but are followed by athletes and fitness buffs alike.
Low-impact workout
• Low-impact exercises are great for beginners and people with back and knee problems. They don't strain the joints, but work with them to increase strength and reduce fat.
• Warm up for five minutes by doing simple stretches and step touches. This will get your heart rate going and loosen limbs.
• Perform side lunges for two minutes. This consists of standing with legs wide apart and keeping the arms stretched out. Touch your left foot with your right arm, stand up, and touch your right foot with your left arm. Repeat the steps as fast as possible but slow down if you feel unnatural pain.
• Front kick lunges are another. Light weights can be used to strengthen the arms. Stand and bend slightly at the knees keeping elbows tucked in and fists loosely clenched. Kick with the right foot, flow back into a bent position and lunge with the left while keeping the left leg straight back. Touch the floor with the right hand to steady yourself. Repeat the exercise with the left foot and go through the entire sequence for five minutes.
High-impact workout
These are a few choices for high-impact workouts and if you're healthy enough to bear the strain, there's nothing like them. Remember, however, that these exercises can cause injury and shouldn't be performed by people suffering from joint and back problems. A quick consultation with your family doctor will help decide a regimen.
• Jumping rope is one of the best ways to burn fat. It's such an effective cardio workout that even top athletes jump rope before proceeding with their usual exercise regimen. Beginners can start with a weighted rope to cut the air faster and progress to a lighter rope as strength and flexibility increase.
There's a technique when jumping rope that reduces strain on the joints. Lightly landing, keeping the knees slightly bent and jumping with a straight back should be practiced. Wear cushioned shoes designed for training/running.
• Jumping jacks are another medium- to high-impact exercise. Weights can be added for strength training. A set of 20 jumping jacks followed by burpees and back to jumping rope will give you a high impact, high intensity workout.
• Burpees are full-body workouts that involve squats, front planks and more squats all at the same time. They're also a high intensity exercise. Beginners should try attempting 20 burpees and increase the number as strength is built.
There are many burpee variants you can incorporate into your high impact cardio workout. You can add a push up to the routine by performing one push up before moving into the plank position. Or you can use only one arm at a time when doing the push up and the plank.
So are you looking to develop a lifestyle that promotes fitness, health, and well-being? Take a step in the right direction by hiring your own personal trainer in Melbourne.

Get Ripped to Shreds in 6 Short Weeks!!!

The time is coming… you just turned 28 and your 10-year high school reunion is just around the corner. You're going to Cabo in 2 months! Or maybe you just want to Get Ripped for summer? Who cares what the reason is! We're all in the same boat and we need to Get Ripped FAST!
A wise man once told me that when a person won't do something, it's for one of 3 reasons. They either 1. Don't know how to do it, 2. Don't know why they should do it, or 3. They simply just don't care. I'm going to assume that you don't know how, or you would already be ripped to shreds. Be it to get the chicks, personal satisfaction, a reunion… everyone has their own reason why. But if your reason is the last one, you should just stop reading this right now. Because if you simply don't care enough, you aren't going to get anywhere. And there's nothing I, or anyone else for that matter, can do to help! So, "go start an ant farm!"
I'm going to tell you how to Get Shredded Fast and explain why these 5 steps work! What you are about to read may or may not be news to you… I don't know. But I do know this, if you follow these 5 steps – you wont be disappointed!

1) Nutrition: focus on your metabolism!
I put this first on the list for a reason. It is the absolute most important part of any successfully shredded man or woman's lifestyle. Your nutritional choices directly affect your metabolism and through it alone, you can totally change your physical appearance! But, whether you are a bodybuilder, a swimmer, a football player, or an every day average overweight American, keeping a consistently clean diet is as hard as it gets… and I'm sure we all can attest to that.

Eat 5-6 Meals per day:
It's funny… I have this friend who swears this 5 or 6 meal-a-day rule is the "Catch" that all the nutrition companies are throwing out there. He says that no one can consistently eat 5 small meals a day and the nutrition companies know this – so they put this rule out there as a fail-safe to ensure that, if their diet program doesn't work, they can blame its failure on the customer! The ironic thing about it is if the customer had followed the rules of their diet program, they would have succeeded!
And the reason they would have succeeded is because the "eat 5 small meals a day" rule works… just probably not in the way you think. You see, it's not really the 5 meals that does it… it's the fact that you aren't relying on 2 or 3 meals to fuel your body for a full 24-hour period. Think about it; your body uses a fairly steady stream of energy all day, so when you feed it in spurts, your body adjusts and begins to store energy instead of using it. Eating 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day ultimately conditions your body to use the energy you provide it – and use it now – because it knows that more is coming soon. There is no need to store the energy (fat) for later… make sense?

Eat Low Glycemic Carbs:
Eating 5-6 small meals per day is a great start. But (there's always a ‘but' isn't there?) that's not the only thing you have to do. Something else you've probably heard before but hasn't been explained fully… the benefit of low GI carbohydrates. Low GI carbs being carbs low on the Glycemic Index (GI). People usually confuse this with an ultra-low carb diet but its not! All you need to do is control the types of carbs you eat… not lose them altogether! Approximately 40% of your total calories should come from low GI carbs. A low GI carb diet will regulate your insulin levels in your body. This is important because your body uses insulin to burn the food you have for immediate energy. To explain it further, when you eat carbs, your body digests them and turns them into glucose. Then insulin is released to metabolize the glucose for energy. High GI carbs have a very fast glucose response, which tells your body to release a lot of insulin quickly. The result, you digest your food very fast… a bad thing! You want your food to digest slowly! And you can control this by eating low GI carbs. Knowing which carbs are low and high GI is pretty easy too. As a general rule, the more processed it is, the higher it is and the more natural (unprocessed) it is, the lower it is.

Here are a few examples.
Low GI Carbohydrates

Black beans
All lettuces

All bran cereals
Whole grain breads
Whole grain pastas
Wild rice

Organic milk
Organic plain yogurt
Low-fat cottage cheese

Fresh vegetable juice

There is, however, one time when you want to digest your food fast! Immediately following a workout, your body is goes into a "need food now!" state and requires a lot of nutrients to begin repairing the muscle that has been broken down. This is the perfect time to ingest 40-50 grams of high GI carbs. Actually, if you don't, you are taking a risk that your body will go into a catabolic state and start breaking down muscle for energy instead of fat. Timing is important!

Increase Protein Intake:
The final part of the diet is to increase your protein intake. Again this is something we have all heard before… but do we really know why? First of all, we all know protein is a crucial part of muscle growth. But what we all don't know is that protein is a good fat burner too! Protein digestion takes a lot of time and a lot of energy! You might be doing this already and if you are… don't stop. A good rule of thumb is to consume 1 gram of protein for each pound of bodyweight. So if you are 200 pounds, you need 200 grams of protein.

2) Workout!
More cardio!
Increasing the intensity of your cardiovascular workouts will no doubt make a vast impact on your fat burning productivity. When it comes to burning fat, the more intense the cardio the better! A lot of fitness trainers and other self proclaimed fitness guru's will tell you to be careful not to over do the cardio, but they don't explain how you should do it. Here's how.
It's a little something I call Anabolic Cardio. You will burn more fat, faster, doing "anabolic cardio". Anabolic cardio is often called HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT is short burst, sprinter-like interval training. Here is a great example of HIIT that can be used doing any form of cardio; treadmill, elliptical trainer, or even an old school Health Rider!
Start off with 3 minutes working at a moderate 60% pace. This will get you warmed up and ready for the rest of the workout. Start the "interval portion" of the workout on minute number 4 going AS HARD AS YOU CAN without falling down or losing your running form (I'm talking 95%) for 1 full minute. Don't pace yourself here, if you can go longer than a minute or two, you probably aren't going hard enough! However, if you can only go at this pace for 20-30 seconds, that is ok... Just go as long as you can, you will improve fast! After the first minute, slow the pace to about 40% of your max. This should be a light jog or even a brisk walk for a minute or two until you recover your breathing. During the slower, recovery interval, try to focus on controlling your breathing and relaxing as much as possible.
Keep this interval of 1-2 minutes at 95% followed by 1-2 minutes at 40% for 10-15 more minutes. Like it or not, Anabolic Cardio is a key component to building a strong, lean, hard body!

Intensify Your Resistance Training
Believe it or not… weight training actually burns more fat than cardio! In fact there have been numerous studies to prove it. This doesn't mean you should just drop cardio work altogether, but that you should have a balance between cardio and weight training. Hopefully you are lifting weights already. If you are… great! If you aren't you really need to. Resistance Weight Training is only way to permanently raise your metabolism! You see… muscle burns fat. Not just when you are working out, but all the time – every day! One pound of muscle alone can burn up to 500 calories per week – that's without doing anything! Lets put it this way: Without resistance training, the best you will ever be is "skinny fat".
The best way to use weight training to get shredded is to stick to the basics! Hit the gym 4 times per week and focus all your efforts on doing compound muscle group movements like Squats, Deadlifts, Military Press, and Power Cleans. In fact, you could do 20 minutes of anabolic cardio then 6 sets of 8 reps on each of these exercises (one exercise per day 4 days per week), you would be in great shape easily in 6 weeks. These are easy to learn movements that use a lot of muscle groups and burn fat like CRAZY!

3) Get more sleep!
Sleep is probably the most overlooked factor in the quest to get shredded. Everyone knows the importance of getting "a good nights sleep" but not many of us go out of our way to be sure we get it. I read somewhere that the average adult gets approximately 7 hours of sleep at night! Not bad… but if you're anything like me; 7 hours of sleep would be a blessing! And 7 hours is fine for the average adult, but if you're an athlete you need more than normal! How much do you need? Well… that's something you'll have to experiment with and find out on your own. 7 hours of sleep might be enough for you – but it likely isn't! I do know this - if you don't get enough sleep, you are limiting your potential to build muscle. Sleep is very anabolic and you need it in order to efficiently recover from grueling workouts and stressful days! Be sure you get enough… it could be the difference maker.

4) Supplements!
Getting Ripped To Shreds is not an easy task for anyone. If it was easy then everyone would be ripped don't you think? I know for sure that, at least for me, it would be virtually impossible without the benefit of supplements. There's no denying that genetics plays a huge role in who is shredded and who isn't, but that's not the only thing. If you could take a behind-the-scenes look at just about any professional athletes' supplement regimen, you would probably be shocked!
Back to the supplements… Getting "shredded" involves keeping (or gaining) muscle mass and losing fat at the same time, two things that are best done separately! So right off the bat the odds are against you. And if you're anything like most Americans, you're going to need all the help you can get! I'm going to recommend 3 separate base or standard supplements and then 3 I-will-do-whatever-it-takes-to-get-there supplements.

Base Supplements:
1.A balanced Meal Replacement (MRP)
An MRP is important for the obvious reasons. Diet is the number one key and with the way life is now, it's pretty difficult to get 6 good meals in a day. However, if you alternate 3 small meals and 3 MRP's throughout the day, you'll be indeed setting yourself up for success. The reason I say "balanced" MRP is because too much protein is a waste, too little carbs will leave you energy-less, and you need to get your vitamins somewhere. Check the label and be sure it has around 30g of protein, 20g carbs, L-Glutamine, BCAA's, EFA's, and an array of multi vitamins. I recommend Myoplex by EAS, KILLER MRP by IMPACT Nutrition, or Lean Mass Matrix by Labrada.

No matter what you think about creatine, you can't deny the facts. Creatine promotes muscle growth and muscle contraction energy. And even though it is thought of as a staple to only muscle building programs, it's an effective addition to almost any program… no matter what the goal is! Just get some and take it as directed.

ZMA is a formula of Zinc and Magnesium Aspartate that has been proven to increase muscle strength, stamina, and recovery. But the main reason I added it to the list is because it will help you relax and sleep better. Like I said before, sleep could be the difference maker. And ZMA's a lot less damaging than taking a shot of tequila or cough medicine! I suggest the original ZMA by SNAC Systems.

Will-Do-Whatever-It-Takes-To-Get-There Supplements:

1.Testosterone Based Anabolic Agents
Even with all the bad things reported about using "legal steroids", they continue to reign in the muscle building supplement world. Why? Because they work! Believe me when I say this. Testosterone is the KING of the Muscle Growth jungle. The more testosterone you have in your system the more muscle you will have on your body. Period. Testosterone helps you recover faster, it raises your metabolism, it burns fat, and it gives you an "attitude" that leads to major muscle growth. If you can focus the increased aggression into your workouts, you will see substantial lean muscle growth, fast! Some great examples of Testosterone based legal steroids are Permadrol by Wesley-Adams, TestoXterone by RedXLabs, Equibolan by IMPACT Nutrition, Halodrol by Gaspari Nutrition, and Dynabolan by Russia Labs.

2.Anabolic Recovery Agent:
Like I said earlier, recovery is the KEY to building muscle. The better you recover, the faster your muscles will grow. Using an anabolic recovery agent is not a substitute for good nutrition choices or for sleep. But using a good recovery agent like RX5 by Red X Labs can put you in a more constant anabolic state between workouts. This will reduce your recovery period and allow you to get back to the gym faster. You can find these products at Zupplements.com

3.Anti-Catabolic Agent:
Anabolic means to build and catabolic means to break down. So, ANTI-Catabolic means agents are those that can help prevent the breakdown of lean muscle tissue; an important feature to anyone who is putting their body through a 6-week "Try To Get Ripped As Fast As I Can" program. You want to lose fat, remember… not muscle! Burn fat, preserve muscle, that's the name of the game! Probably the best anti-catabolic agent available today is a veterinary injectable "supplement" called Kynoselen. There is supposedly a human version of this product too but I have yet to find it.

5) Know what not to do!
Now that I have explained all the tools you need to get ripped in 6 weeks, I feel obligated to address some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to lose fat fast! First of all you have to steer clear of the "Fab Diets" that claim you can drop 10 pounds in 48 hours. Even though these claims are true, you don't want to do it. The weight you lose will be temporary at best! And because these diets help you lose weight, not fat, they wont get you shredded.
Fasting is another common mistake. You have to eat and eat consistently. As I pointed out before, it's imperative that you don't put your body in a "lets save the food for later" state. Remember, even though you are reducing your overall calories, your body will store more fat!
Oh… one more thing…. No matter what else you do over the course of the next 6-weeks… even if you mess up 10 times… even if it looks like you aren't going to make it… no matter what… DO NOT GIVE UP!!! During the first 4 weeks you might not see one single change in your body composition. But that last 2 weeks could completely change it around! I like to think of it like coming back in the 4th quarter! Never give up because all that hard work will not go to waste! Remember what I said? People don't do things for one of three reasons… don't let your reason be that you simply don't care!

Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy

Hyperbaric medicine, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the medical use of oxygen at a higher than atmospheric pressure. Hyper means increased and baric relates to pressure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) refers to intermittent treatment of the entire body with 100-percent oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The earth's atmosphere normally exerts about 15 pounds per square inch of pressure at sea level. That pressure is defined as one atmosphere absolute (1 ATA). In the ambient atmosphere we normally breathe approximately 20 percent oxygen and 80 percent nitrogen. While undergoing HBOT, pressure is increased up to two times (2 ATA) in 100% oxygen.
This increased pressure, combined with an increase in oxygen to 100 percent, dissolves oxygen in the blood plasma and in all body cells, tissues and fluids at up to 10 times normal concentration-high enough to sustain life with no blood at all (from 20% to 100% oxygen is an increase of 5 times, from 1 ATA to 2 ATA can double this to a 10-fold increase).
Some of the many amazing benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy are that it :
* greatly increases oxygen concentration in all body tissues, even with reduced or blocked blood flow;
* stimulates the growth of new blood vessels to locations with reduced circulation, improving blood flow to areas with arterial blockage;
* causes a rebound arterial dilation, resulting in an increased blood vessel diameter greater than when therapy began, improving blood flow to compromised organs;
* stimulates an adaptive increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the body's principal, internally produced antioxidants and free radical scavengers; and,
* aids the treatment of infection by enhancing white blood cell action.
The use of increased atmospheric pressure for medical therapy has intrigued many physicians and scientists for hundreds of years. Though not new, HBOT has recently gained importance for treatment of chronic degenerative health problems related to atherosclerosis, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, diabetic ulcers, wound healing, cerebral palsy, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, macular degeneration, and many other disorders. Wherever blood flow and oxygen delivery to vital organs is reduced, function and healing can be aided with HBOT. When the brain is injured by stroke, CP, or trauma, HBOT may activate stunned parts of the brain to restore function.
Results can be dramatic. Patients with cerebral vascular disease commonly recover from complications of stroke more readily after HBOT. This is also true for potentially gangrenous legs and feet caused by blocked circulation, and for slow-healing diabetic ulcers. HBOT relieves pain, helps fight infection, and keeps threatened tissues alive.
One of the world's most experienced authorities on hyperbaric medicine Dr. Edgar End, clinical professor of environmental medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin had this to say : "I've seen partially paralyzed people half carried into the HBOT chamber, and they walk out after the first treatment. If we got to these people quickly, we could prevent a great deal of damage."
Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy helps Autism, Cerebral Palsy, MS, Parkinsons, Athletic Performing, healing of wounds, used as immune defense and much more.

An Overview of Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is just one of several options available to people who are suffering from shoulder-related pain, injury, or both. More traditional open procedures are also still performed, though the percentage of this type of surgery has declined dramatically since the introduction of newer techniques. Some large-scale issues, such as major fractures and replacements, require full access to the entire area, which can only be achieved through an open procedure.
The word "arthroscopic" is based on the use of an arthroscope, a small medical instrument that can be inserted into the body through an incision to access an area where the surgical procedure is to take place. In the case of shoulder surgery, a small camera is first inserted through an incision. The medical team can see an up close and personal viewing of the entire area on a screen in the operating room. Typically, additional incisions are then made throughout the surrounding area. The surgeon inserts small instruments where needed to perform the operation.
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means patients are in and out of the hospital quickly. Patients are typically sedated throughout the procedure and need someone to drive them home afterwards. It's not uncommon for a patient to be home and resting within a matter of a few hours after the operation has been completed.
One of the benefits of arthroscopic shoulder surgery is that recovery time may be significantly less than if an open procedure had taken place. The medical team will provide detailed post-op care instructions outlining how to properly rest the affected area and when the patient can begin various levels of physical activity. The patient will wear a sling to ensure proper healing takes place.
Another benefit of this type of operation is that post-op pain is usually much lower. The application of ice will help and painkillers may be prescribed for the days immediately following the operation. It's important to remember that some pain may persist for several months after shoulder surgery, so patience is key.
As mentioned above, arthroscopic surgery is not recommended for all types of shoulder problems. The most common issues it can address include damage to the rotator cuff, tendons, articular cartilage, labrum, or other soft tissues of the joint area. If you suffer from ongoing pain or have been injured in some way, seek the advice of a qualified surgeon. He or she will talk through the details of the problem and will work to provide a comprehensive solution that will best address the issue. Sometimes, that solution will involve surgery, but other times it may be possible to get results without having an operation.
